Anyone on the creek today ? The flow chart reads 43 cfs, is this correct ? Is there no min. flow standard for putah creek ? I don't know about you guys but last time the flows hovered around 45 the fishing was really not very productive for me, that was winter of 2006. Well, looks like I might need to head on up to somewhere else for the weekend. I'm sure the fish are throughly confused right about now.
I had planned to drop the kids at school and head up. Will probably still give it a go.
300 to 43 overnight. Kind of bizarre!
Hey Shaun, were you the same "Shaun" posting as "the captain" last year?
Cheers, Ed

Drastic drops in flows suck for the fish and the fishing. If this wild trout fishery thing happens will there be some kinda of control or atleast recommendations on better ways to manage the flows of the creek that will help the fish(and the fishing)? Chances are good that some fish are stuck in pools right now. It wouldnt be the first time I've seen it either.
To their credit SCWA is concerned about flow fluctuations, but its a recent concern. They have plans to study the effects of fluctuations this winter on the spawning fish. Right now, if you have a camera and come across stranded fish, take a picture and post it or foward to Keith B. It will get forwarded to the right people.
Yes Ed thats me, Remember that fish i got that day of the cleanup . It saddens me to think there are fish right now stranded due to the drop. Hopefully it won't last long.
Yuppers ... I've been reading your posts shaun, and just figured out it was you.
I'll never forget that fish. MONSTROUS! I was in that spot second half of today. (10/16) The flows kicked its butt. I managed 1 about 13" looked and fought wild, but had lots 'o' chrome. Was a jumper too.
I was all over the bridge area mid day to afternoon. It was like walking a tide pool. Scary. Didn't see any trapped fish. 2 to hand, 2 others on. All smallish. 8 - 10". People were very civilized by the way ... contrary to some of the recent posts I've read. Doesn't take many folks to bind up that area at these flows.
The gauge reading says it dropped about 1.5 feet, looked like 3 feet to me, almost everywhere I fished.
I'd think that releases this small from the dam only get worse on the creek in day 2, 3 and so on.
The grass and silt also seem much heavier than I remember them at this time last year.
I think I remember the "canal cleaning" last year. They shut it off all at once and turned it on all at once. Sent all of the loose grass and debris floating downstream ... one more thing to look forward to.
Otter had the right idea heading north.
Good luck all. Ed

I was out on the creek on Wednesday, caught a few fish in the morning, then changed spots, and decided to go back up to #1 where I had fished in the morning. I thought: "you've lost your mind, why were you thinking the wading was tricky this morning? Now you could walk right across the river." Then I saw that the river had dropped a foot! I didn't realize they changed levels during the day (I guess they would not raise it by that much during the day, that might really catch people off guard.
Surprise, with such a dramatic change in water level, I didn't catch any more fish after the water level dropped. ( a great excuse for a poor fising afternoon!) I am sure the fish were moving to new places. Anyway, hope they get it back up to 100 soon.
