I hear rumors that putah is most likely soon not gonna be stocked anymore.  They're trying to make it self substaining. I was wondering what would be the ups and downs of that.  To me it would seem that there would be less fish but the fish might be bigger because less copetition on there food.  but i would like no hear from someone who now that there talking about. thanks

I dont know the exact details of the plan. In my opinion if there was no stocking, the creek would benefit significantly.

In truth PC is self sustaining and the wild fish are healthy-look at some of those mini-footballs that are being caught. Planting of catchables is not going to stop immediately, but it may eventually switch to fingerlings, which are thought of as semi-wild and they grow into wild adults, if they survive being eaten by the large fish. They are a positive way to add fish. If the fishery has declined, and its not clear to me how much it has, because the "experts" catch plenty of fish year around, its more the overall pressure of so many more anglers, that is a strong contributor to a decline.

Obtaining Wild Trout status is a goal being championed by Putah Creek Trout, where any plants would be fingerlings, spawning and food habitat would be improved, and spawning fish would be better protected from harrassment. As previously noted by Otter and MX19 in other posts, opportunities to volunteer on various projects in this program will be coming up.

To maintain a self substaining fishery it seems that some additional spawning habitat would be helpful.

The tough thing is creating areas that last from year to year and don't require a lot of ongoing maintenance.  All of the little projects I did down by the big island, years ago, never lasted a full year as the summer flows or winter high water years blew them downstream.

I'd be game to donating time if the pc channels were followed and things were a little more reselient.  Perhaps integrating a few gabion baskets?

Isn't a gabion basket those wire mesh things they fill with rocks to deal with erosion ? I've noticed alot more silt this year on putah, Hopefully this wont effect spawning.

Yes, thats a gabion basket.  They should work for creating structure as well.  Everything I did in years past, I didn't tie together (ie the basket) so it never lasted.
