I decided to get to a spot today, no matter how wet I had to get to make it.
I got wet.
I also had the best day on Putah I've had since last fall.
In 2 and a half hours, I must have hooked 30-40 fish. Landed about half. Average size was about 13 inches. Had several pigs on, but in fast water they are hard to land. Did manage to get a couple 13-15 inchers to hand. Man the natives are feisty.
Got a couple nasty beat up planters.
Fish of the day came by accident.
Made a bad cast and my line was just hanging in the water as I got my stuff under control. Nice 15 incher made my fly his lunch while it was hanging in the film.
If you can, go find some untouched water. The fish are hungry.
Great Job! I'm glad to hear people have been doing so well lately, and the reduced flows will definitely be a welcome change. I also was getting pretty wet on my last few trips trying to get into some untouched water.
Hey MX - you left a lot of fish for me, so thanks.
As far as what's working?
Caddis poopahs fished with weight and on the swing and any good mayfly nymph. Prince, pheasant tail, rs2, skinny bodied may flies, etc. There's a killer mayfly hatch from 3:00 til dusk right now and the fish are keying on those.
Fish rise throughout the late afternoon/evening in various spots, but Putah has never been a dry fly haven. I do OK at dusk. Small caddis, small mayfly patterns, and emergers are the ticket. Sometimes big caddis work, but you need to see some flying around usually.
I got fished hard on wed...numbers have come way down....putahs all your's for the rest of the year..nothing but steelhead for me till early next year...say hi to all my fish...
