Putah Creek Clean Up September 20, 2008
Permalink

The Putah Creek Trout group will be taking part in the Coastal Clean Up activity by working on clean up of the Interdam area (Monticello Dam to Access #5). We invite all the members of this Forum to join us from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. We will meet at the access #5 parking area, set up teams, and disperse to each of the main access areas. Trash bags will be provided, but we could use help with pick up trucks or vans if we need to move the collected stuff back to Winters.

This is a great opportunity to meet fellow forum members as well as help the Creek. Putah Creek Trout is working towards obtaining a Wild Trout designation for PC. For more information on the Wild Trout Program go the the DFG website and navigate to the Heritage and Wild Trout page. Designated WT waters are managed to enhance the wild fishery and the angler's experience, something we all want.

Attached is the Poster circulated by Coastal Clean UP through Putah Creek Council.

I've learned so much from this site and would love nothing more than the opportunity to meet some of you. Unfortunately I work Saturdays - all of you that run your own business know that the best part is that you can put your 60+ hrs a week in whenever you want !  biggrin It's also the weekend before my (repeatedly postponed) 5 day trip to the NF Yuba so I'll be motivated to get my desk cleared that week.

I'm sure that there's more than a few of us that would really like to participate but can't and would like to contribute in any way. Can I pick up the tab for the garbage bags? Could someone set up a clearing house so some of us could perhaps contribute to covering lunch and parking for those that show up and do the work?

I've only been to the creek a couple of times and I think it's very important that we do all we can to protect it. On that note, I have a close friend who is pretty well connected in Sac and as an avid rafter, very involved in CA rivers. If someone involved with getting Putah designated as 'wild trout' wants to contact me I'll be happy to point you in the direction of some friendly people.

Again, if there's anything that we non participants can do to encourage more, please let us know. And thanks in advance to all that do. (Da*n I wish so much that I could walk the creek with some of you guys!) furious

There is usually another clean up after the closure in Nov. Don't worry, there will still be trash, so make your plans for late Nov.

Thanks for your posts and we look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it. If others of you are planning to come, it would help us if post here.

The coastal clean up group is providing bags and latex gloves. We have not planned for a lunch or post clean up fishing fun because our board has to meet afterwards, but we encourage those that can to bring their gear. There is a Tacos-on-wheels unit that sets up shop at the HiWay 128/ Railroad Ave intersection and is highly recommended for lunch.

We will meet at the Access #5 parking lot and disperse from there. There is a sign in and waiver of liability form to be completed and then off we go.

I have just read the waiver and if you are under 18 a parent or legal guardian must sign it. I can email the form as a pdf file that can be printed or mail it. Send me a PM with contact info.

I'd love to make it as well, but will have to work this Saturday, after having fun last weekend.  If there is something in November, count me in for sure.  This is a great opportunity to give something back.

Yeah I havent been able to attend the last few clean ups due to football or rugby coaching duties and next Sat is no different unfortunately.Due to the fact that both of my boys play but they are on different teams because of different ages and I help coach both teams. I am on the field from 8am until usually around 8 or 9 pm, needless to say a very looooong day but I love every minute of it! Anyway thanks to all who can participate in the clean up .And CaBrit our non-profit group Putah Creek Trout will one day need funds , letter writing or volunteerism and when that happens I will post that info on this site,so just keep an eye out.As for the present clean up financial help I believe Yolo county has a large part in footing the bill but you may want to contact Putah creek council.org to see if they need help monitarily,I do know they have fund raisers and membership donations. In fact I am a member and donate once a year, its a good cause these folks do alot of work for lower Putah.

Is Putah Creek Trout capable of accepting donations now?

We are not able to take donations right now. Putah Creek Council is a good choice; some of their work includes improving salmon spawning habit.

We encourage everyone to bring their gear for afterwards.

One last thing: bring your own hydration and food supplies. We have been provided with limited amounts of water and jelly belly samples-they probably won't keep you nourished.

So how did it work out?

I was with a group working on Alamo creek in Vacaville.  We collected everything from plastic grocery bags to engine blocks.  Last I heard was that Vacaville had roughly 350-400 volunteers out and about.

We had a small, but dedicated group, including two from the Davis Flyfishers. We only did #5, #4 and the DFG parking lots (also known as "The Dam"). The ranger from Lake Solano had a group of boy scouts and a "workservice" crew of young people, so they took #3-#1. Every one thought there was less trash than expected at 4-5, so hats off to MX19 who fishes that area and regularly hauls a bag out each trip. The survey box at #5 has been broken into, so is unavailable for the moment. I found some of the completed surveys out in the weeds. There is a question to pose to the forum: do the other boxes still have blank forms available? If not we will look at replacing them.

Overall 7 people collected 70 lbs of trash. Nothing out of the ordinary, except maybe the Winnie-the-Pooh childs tooth brush (sorry, too used to recycle).

The Winters to Davis group had over 100 volunteers.
