We worked the third shift of the DFG fish rescue today from 6 till 2. Over a thousand fish were electroshocked last night and were then placed in holding pens. The average size of the fish we saw were ten to twelve inches most were rainbows some browns. The larger fish were mostly browns , twenty to twenty five. Brookies were in a separate pen , all were all small , ten or twelve inches. The two biggest fish they brought in unfortunately died, a big mackinaw over thirty inches, and a brown over thirty inches , weighted in at 18 lbs plus. I didn't see the mac but did get a photo of the brown where DFG had it on ice. They have a photo when the fish first came out of the net that will be up on their web site.
does anyone know what the percentage of survival is for fish that are eltroshocked ? That actually sounds like some fun volunteer work, I wish I had the time to help out.
From what I saw most of the small fish seemed to well. When the fish were moved from the holding pen to the trucks they removed the dead fish, most seemed to be rainbows, some medium 12inches to 20 inches. The brookies did really well. I went with a truck that released them into Red Lake . As soon as they were in the water they were gone, not like hatchery fish that just hang around.
Right on for the hard work James. I'm glad they're saving some of the fish. Still seems to suck hearing about old fish dying though. They dont deserve to die.
