A putah riffle sculpin is dark brown to dark greenish, the ones I have caught anyways. They look just like little lingcod and almost seem to "crawl" along the bottom.
Yes the riffle sculpin truly are just like mini lingcod,I rescued a couple 3 years ago when they dropped the flows in Putah, one of them was I thought dead.It was dried up and looked like it had been out of the water for about a day or two,but I noticed its gills were still barely moving so I took it home and put it in my 55 gal fish tank.He is still here and doing quite well. These things kinda crawl on the bottom with thier large pectoral fins and then they dart out after what ever it is they are going to eat.I really never see them swim and they seem to stay under rocks most of the time. One of their favorite food in Putah is caddis pupae.I always tell people that I believe these things will be joining us humans here on land in another couple of million years!
