I'm new to flyfishing but used to fish with bait on putah creek (i've taken a 20 year break), particularly what we used to call the island. I've have a couple of basic questions. Is it necessary to wade or can I be reasonably successful from the bank? Is the entire length good or just up by the dam?  The area around Putah looks thrashed compared with 20 years ago. Do you guys know of anywhere within 2 hours of Vacaville thats reliable, I'm not looking for trophies, just some fish.

My first thought is the Lower Yuba.  There are some good-sized, hard-fighting fish in that river.  It's only about 1.5 hours from Vacaville.  The fish can be hard to catch, though, because the river gets pounded.  If you can afford to hire a guide, it will be well worth it.  You will learn a ton and have a better chance of catching fish.

if you want a great guide for the lower yuba, get a buddy to go half with ya and hire Dave Sloan from american fly fish at 916-483-1222. he lives the yuba. and he is a great guide. well rounded individual and a great person. i have met him a few times with clients on the American and they talk nothing but good things about him

HIRE HIM. well worth it.

as jt said. fish the yuba, you will fall in love with it.

Nobody knows the Lower Yuba better than Hogan Brown....You wanna talk about an all around great guy and superb fishing guide, Hogan is the man.

Check out his website:

It is necessary to wade Putah unless you have superior casting skills and can launch it out there, get a stellar drag free drift, and pull the fish in without it running downstream with you chasing it.

And the entire length is good.

Thanks for the input. We like fishing even when not successful. But, I'm with my 9 y/o son and a lack of action really shortens the day.

+1 on Sloan. Never got to fish with him but he was a valuable part of my fly tying learning. Great all around guy and great tyer to boot. He has some great patterns that have caught me some of the biggest fish of my life.
