I went out to the E. Carson on Saturday, and probably had the best day of fly fishing I have had so far. Got to Hangman's around 6:30, tied up a rubber leg copper john and san juan and started off. My goal was to fish quickly down to the Marklieville hole and start pounding it from there down. However, funny thing...I started catching fish. Second cast, I hook a lunker who just sits at the bottom for a minute or so and then finally gets pi$$ed off and shakes me off. I catch 4 more on my way down (6"-12") all on the san juan when I run into a father son combo. The father tells me he just switched to a hopper and the action has been good. I was a little hesitant until right in the middle of our conversation his son hooks and lands a 18"-20". Ok, I'll switch. Man what a good thing that was. I had never caught a fish on a dry, but immediately I get smashed and land a little guy. I was so excited I was hootn and hollerin over an 8" bow!! I fished till 12 and ended up landing another 15 or so on the dry and missed at least that many. Most were smaller, but I did land a couple 14"s and missed a couple that were much bigger.
What a great day, and one where I learned so much. I feel like throwing the dry really helped me get a better understanding of the water. I caught numerous fish in water that I typically passed over. The action was good from about 9-11, but it became more sporadic between 11 and 12. Hopefully, some of you can get out their and enjoy!
the carson has been fishing really good lately, even though the flows are really really low, about 80cfs right now. but if you find the oxygenated water or those deep pools its on like donkey kong. hopper droppers are my go to set up for the carson this time of yr, nice post. glad to see that the east carson is treating others as good as it treats me. i cant wait to get up there and fish it again.

If you guys wanna see crazy hopper fishing, watch Fisheye 2 when Mikey and his buddy go deep into the canyon of the East carson and just hammer them with hopper.
I deleted a link for the fly since DTP posted the pic.
Mikey Wier's Whopper is the first hopper pattern that I use on the EC. As much as I love deer hair hoppers, eventually they sink even with the use of floatant. The foam stays boyant. What I like best is the profile. It's a great shape. I have more of those hoppers in my fly box than any other hopper pattern.
Thanks Bugger...it was definitely exciting. That Wier's Whopper looks really similar in size and profile to what I was throwing. Can't wait to check out that video at lunch!
I just an article on the mono loops. He ties in the loops to stabilize the fly but also to give you something to tie your leader to. You can use the loop on the front of the fly to tie a loop knot just like you would tie on an indicator. It allows you to adjust the depth of your dropper as you fish. That guy is a genius.

I was lucky enough to see the Hoppicator tonight a a buddy's house. It looks really cool. Should be a stellar performer on the EC and E Walker. Idylwilde has tons of awesome new patterns coming out for 2009!!!
that pattern doesnt look to hard to tie. man i need to get a book so i can tie up some different flies.
