Your options are limited as far as camping goes, I'd try to get a spot at solano lake campground, You better try to make a reservation this time of year. As for putah fishing I wouldn't expect much with flows between 600 and 700 cfs, In my opinion prime time will come as soon as the flows drop to around 300 or lower. I 'm sure some guys nail fish this time of year but chucking 1 to 2 inch long strings of shot isn't much fun. Good luck.
Hey shon42073 I really appreciate it and thanks for responding to my post so quick. I guide up on the Upper and lower sacramento river and used to fish Putah creek as a kid. I want to get back into it. do you know when the flows will be in the 300's?
I will start off by saying welcome back to putah.. Just looked at my putah log book...for the last few years flows have started to drop in early aug.. bad news is they can go right back up the next day...By late aug early sept flows are in the 300 range and slowly dropping .. Fishing gets better during the lower flows, but the creek also gets a lot busier. The putah regulars Finally come out to fish with the putah die hards... you dont have to chuck shot during the higher flows..you can strip streamers ,dead drift LARGE flys ( sorry, not sharing any secrets) or stay on the water late and try your luck with drys..JL's been working the drys with some success...
yeah lake solano is your best bet for camping unless you become a member at canyon creek resort real quick. but i dont know how that works. if worse comes to worse you can camp alittle further away up at lake berryessa but check on res. there too.
c'mon now mx19, dont remind me the crowds are coming back soon, I've been enjoying some very peaceful fishing out there lately. and the up and down flows oh well. enjoy the last month of fast deep water.
Fearnofish, Same story here fished putah regularly about 15 years ago and just came back to her about 3 years ago. Alot of spots changed over time but some did not. The fishing has held up well over the years, Of course its probably never going to be quit what it was back then. The crowds, Well its part of fishing on putah, Most are freindly and ethical.
mx, exactly!!! steelhead are a comin. no didnt make it out for springers got kinda stuck on some yuba trout and some kokanee fishin (not on the fly). well i take that back I did fish a few times on the American late spring it actually had some really nice springers this year. I know i should of been on the feather and I usually do make it up there but didnt this year. It was good for springers this year wasnt't it?
man i cant wait for the steelhead to come through. its should be a good yr. already been scouting out some spots to hit when they start comming through. especially when they close down from hazel bridge down to ancil hoffman park. i got several spots that hold fish when that place closes. but when it opens back up. sailor bar here we come. ill see you guys out there.

Thanks mx19 I'll let you know if I'm interested in a guide.
Brian: Man oh man, that rod. I felt terrible. I'll never forget the sound of your rod folding over like that. Sorry buddy. Can I cover the shipping & handling for ya? It's the least I can do.
As for the Trinity let's see if we can set something up. I think Shaun may be interested as well.
I'm defenitly going to the trinity this year, alone or with anyone that wants to go. No guides man. After last year on the american i think it'll be coastal rivers this year. Eel, garcia, gualala, garcia, klamath, navarro, smith, mad, mattole, vanduzen, It may be hit or miss but i'll have fun trying.
Yah the trinity is awesome--- I guide up in the area- fishing the upper sacramento river each weekend and the lower out of my driftboat every few weekends. Anyone else have a driftboat? I have a riverwolf sidedrifter series that comes from a company in oregon. If you guys need some tips on any part of the sacramento please respond. It is a great river and I know it well ( been fishing there since I was 10). I also am great friends with some awesome guides and could point you in the right direction if you are interested in doing a trip there- its not far from the trinity!!!!!!!!!
Steelhead? Did someone say steelhead? Yes the bug is already here, speaking of coastal rivers, i made my first trip up to three different rivers in southern Oregon last year chasing the grey ghost with some buddys on their drift boats. Absolutely hooked, ill be going back every year. Nothing like fishing absolutely amazing looking water surrounded by redwoods with seals swimming up a couple miles from the ocean chasing the steelhead. Not to mention the size of the fish, BIG. Counting down the days till January, sure ill find my valley river steelhead fix before then though.

all of a man's addictions end and begin when he learns to fly fish
well just got my rod back today. and well they didnt fix it. oh well. but guess what they did. the upgraded me a new rod. YES I SAID NEW. i originally spent 50 dollars on the old original red fly rod. spent 10 to send it in, and 30 to redington, and what do i get. a nice brand new redington red fly 2 9ft 2pc 6wt priced at 180 from redington, not to shabby at all. and best of all it matches my 10ft 4pc 7wt red fly 2 perfectly.
i am extremely happy with redington and recommend them to anyone. reasonable prices and great customer service. i didnt have my warranty card and they took care of me without any hesitation. sent it out on the 24th, and got it today. 6 day turn around with a new rod. cant beat that one bit. again highly recommended in my book.
so ill be bringing it with me tomorrow when i fish with shaun up in the sonora pass area.

NICE ! I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago with an old but very nice fenwick spinning rod, Broke it and they didn't make that rod anymore so they sent me a brand new WAY better graphite rod, the old one was fiberglass. New rod was about 5 times the original cost of the broken rod. I'vE also had great customer service from thomas & thomas.
No joke I did also with a redington crosswater. Though it was only a 89 dollar pole the company sent me a new one. I was really surprised. I have moved on to using a sage lauch which is more top of the line.
it was a 2pc rod and as i was roll castin it the top section flew off. well went to put it back on the bottom half and realized that it was cracked. so i glued it for temp fix, it held up well until i started catching steelhead. the hairline fractures got very very bad, and it broke on a roll cast once again.

Oh thant hurts! Hopefully you had a back up rod , so that your trip fishing steelhead was not ruined because of an equiptment failure. Also if you are in the future looking for a new rod I have had better luck fishing with a 4 piece (my rdington that broke was a two piece and my sage launch is a four piece and I have had no trouble with it). Good luck with this years steelie season and tight lines.
the rod most likely would not have failed if it was properly put together. When putting sections of your rod together insert it at a 90 degree angle and "twist" it around to line up the guides. always do it the same, never deviate. If a rod breaks you did it yourself, Rods don't just break. You all are talking steelies when theres at least 2 months of good sierra fishing left. Oh and fearnofish I haven't ever used a "pole" for flyfishin, Its called a flyrod bro.
u can get some one the AR right now, the feather is fishing good for them right now, ill be giving the yuba a try tomorrow, the trinity and klamath are also fishing good right now for them as well. dont know about the coastal rivers. i do blame myself for the rod coming off and breaking, just glad that redington hooked me up

I know you like the AR Brian but it's not for me. I tried it last year when it was happening and it kind of reminded me of fishing at a trout farm. All the hatchery fish stacked up near the chute where you like to fish. Way over crowded too, don't like combat fishing. Try coastal steelies for more of a challenge! Way hotter fish too.
the reason i love the ar is one, i can fish it and catch fish. 2 every once in a blue moon you will catch a really fresh fish that makes you work for it. 3 if you like nymphing like i do for steelies there is plenty of room (swing ya that is where it gets crouded) 4 well its my backyard, 5 min to 15 min drive i am fishing either at the mouth of the ar or at nimbus dam. 5 you can have some fun with lighter tackle 6wt or 5wt if you are really crazy(dont know if i will be doing that again this yr, ill stick with my 6 and 7wt) lastly its a place where i can bring people who have never fished for steelhead and i can get them into them on a consistant basis.
ill tell you this, you let me know when you are heading out there and ill be there bright and early with the starbucks and donuts. maybe even a fishing buddy (shon42073) we have both been talkin about hittin up some coastal steelies but dont know even where to start, but if you do, please pm us 2 anytime we are down to go anytime when ever you are.

Packrat is right and a trout farm now that's funny. The AR well lets just say we're very fortunate to have a river like that so close to home. But really its not all that. I like combat fishing, I've seen some of the funniest damn things out there when you get that many people fishing that close together. I'll still go out there, it's to close to home not to. and once in awhile you do get some good fish but not way up there where your bringing everybody. most of those fish up there are just beat up old dogs and whores.
