I'm an East Coaster visiting family in Napa and am hoping to get some fishing done while I am in the area.
I will arrive in Napa on August 14, and will be staying for about a week.
I talked to people at your local fly shop (did a search for Abel dealers in the 94558 zip code), and they mentioned Putah Creek for short day trip trout fishing, American River for Shad and Stripers, and the Trinity for Steelies and Salmon.
I'm not sure if I'll have the time to hit the American and Trinity (convince me :D ), but I definetly want to try out the Putah.
Could I get recommendations for what to throw and where to go?
I also would appreciate rod weight and length recommendations.
what most people will say is just read read and read. if you read the post that are all ready on this board, you will get a crap load of info on putah. trust me there is a bunch. thats what i did. i read then hit up the river.
as far as a rod, a 9ft 5wt is a great rod for this type of water. i use a 9ft 5wt st croix and love it.

Since your staying in Napa I would just stop by sweeneys sports and get the 411 on putah creek...4,5,6wt rods in the 9ft range will work just fine...You might hit the creek at the perfect time...when the flow starts to drop the fishing picks ups.You will know it cause this message boards going to light up...If your interested in a guided trip on putah late summer is one of the best times of the year.
My buddies were hammering salmon last week on the Trinity. No brainer if you ask me but one hell of a drive from Napa. There's a lot of smoke up there though which is not bueno.
Only way to figure putah out is by spending alot of time there. In my opinion success on putah is measured in months or even years, not days or weeks. It has its own personality and she can be a real bitch sometimes. Then throw in the fact that it isn't properly managed and you have yourself a real challenge. Oh and i do beleive the salmon fishing ban is in effect, I find it odd that although dfg biologist admit recreational and commercial fishing have little to nothing to do with the decline, Once again we fisherman are the ones that get to suffer. Hello.....Its all about the fact there isn't enough water flowing through the delta these days, Lack of water makes for concentrated amounts of pollution, lack of water, concentrated pollutions levels, Seems real simple to me.
The ban on salmon fishing only applies to rivers flowing into the delta . The Trinity and the klamath are both open so they both are going to get a lot of pressure. Also the Sacramento is going to be open in a small section in Dec to salmon fishing. Why? Who knows, It really doesn't make any sense .

Hi New member and I was wondering if there is camping on the creek anywhere and if you could get me the link. Also what are the names of the flies that have been working for late summer?
