Every year all the boys on my moms side of the family, including conefish, spend 5 days fishing in the isolated lake Hi Huim. We stay in a little cabin with no electricity or running water, and we just fish all day every day. This was our tenth year, and by far the best. The fishing was amazing but the adventures along the way were even more spectacular. This year we were lucky enough to have a few visitors. For the first time in ten years, a bear surprised us on the last morning by doing a little fishing in the creek that is barely 30 feet from our cabin. Also, a big buck mule deer took a dip right off the point by our cabin.
Like a lot of you guys, one of my dreams has been to jump off the back of the boat to save a rod from being lost. The fish at this lake are the hardest fighting/hitting fish I have ever had the chance to catch. Our first year we lost one rod, but this year we ALMOST lost two. The first day a rod went over on my boat. I dived in after it, held my breath and went under. I grabbed the rod when it was about 6 feet under the water and 12 feet from the boat. It was the greatest feeling I have ever felt. The next day the same thing happened. The only difference is I landed the fish and my uncle didn't. We caught pretty much all of our fish on flies tied by me and my cousin (conefish) -- which were the green carey, doc spratly, olive woolybugger and a sedge emerger. This year we caught around 20 keepers, ate 3 of them and smoked the rest. The biggest fish this year was a 22" hog which dwarfed all the other 15, 16 and 17 inchers we caught.

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
