Fished the MFF over Father's Day weekend and had a blast. Not very many BIG fish but lots of average wild fish. The evening hatch of caddis was a blast tons of bugs coming off the water and many fish rising to them. Hiked down below Nelson Creek about a mile missed one really nice fish that snapped me off. Tough getting around down there though. Overall great time and if you have a chance get up there now before the water gets lower and warmer.

Don't be fooled...there are BIG fish to be had in the MFF. Next time don't pass up Nelson Creek. If you park at the bridge where it crosses Nelson then hike upstream you get into really nice water with surprisingly large fish for the size of the creek. Dry fly heaven back there. A couple of years ago, me and a buddy parked at the bridge and backpacked up Nelson for an overnight trip, it was awesome!

Look on a map for the town of Quincy, that's where it's at. You can also get there through Truckee on North HWY 89 and go to the town of Greaeagle. I think that's how it's spelled?

Nelson creek is beautiful.

BUT watch out for dredger holes.  There are a lot, and one I saw a few years ago was about 20 feet deep and pretty much covered the entire stream bed.

I hate seeing dredgers destroy a creek bed.  They're all over the north fork of the Yuba too.  I don't get why this is legal.  It's like letting someone go into a national forest and chop up trees to get some bark.

Really pointless and destructive in my view.

Just got back from Buck's Lake (near QUincy). The whole region is on fire and most areas  around the MFF are closed to access right now. Nelson Creek is very near one of the fires that threatened Portola, GreyEagle, etc.The smoke was horrendous all week-no place for someone with asthma or other breathing problems to visit. When we left yesterday only Oroville QUincy Road was open. Info at www.fs.fed.us/r5/plumas or http://plumasfiresafe.org. Phone 530-283-7882, 7883, 7884
