Equipment suggestions for a newbie... sort of
Permalink

Just getting back into fly fishing after a 40 year hiatus, and I could use some friendly gear advice. I have a 5 wt. rod combo that my wife gave me to get started with, but that is the extent of my gear so far. Any and all suggestions about wader types or brands, boots and any other clothing items, fly assortment and sizes, leader and tippet sizes, just about anything and everything you can think of for fishing Putah would be greatly appreciated. My plan is to start fishing late fall, early winter this year, at which time I plan to set up an outing with a guide for my first time out. Any help you can offer would be great!!!

you ask a big question...I will answer one part and Iam sure others will chip in ...
I will help with the fly selection..there are a lot of great flys that work on putah, but you need to keep it simple so you can focus on all the other important aspects of fly fishing...I put together a top 5 pick for putah and trust that they will catch fish if used properly.you dont want to be second guessing your fly choice when your try to learn everything else about fly fishing...
try to keep it simple.simple will catch fish...

my top 5 nymphs for someone new to putah..
tan caddis pupah
hogens s&m
micro may
flash back pt
sucker spawn

you can walk into sweeney sports in napa and buy all these great flys

Kaju, welcome aboard! Use the "keyword search" for previous posts on boots, waders, etc. Hopefully, this will lead you in the right direction. I've found tons of help/suggestions reading over old posts. Have fun!

Welcome to the board Kaju! One thing to keep in mind is that Putah has New Zealand Mud Snails. You'll need to kill the little buggers before you wade into any other streams. Just stick your boots and waders in the freezer over night and that should do it. Also be sure to get Bono as your guide. Good luck!
