What are some good size flies?

In general, what are some good size fly hooks, for example, 10, 12, 14, 16 etc... Also, do any of you know of any good and cheap online stores to buy these flies?? Oh, and these flies are mainly for trout. Oh and what is a good size for woolly buggers?

Thanks!

I guess your talking about putah creek ? Most tend to go small, 16 to 22, some go smaller. I wouldn't buy"cheap" online fly's, I made that mistake once, The hooks break, the fly's come apart, and the overall quality is very low, Anyways we all should be supporting our local fly shops. I don't fish much with buggers so can't help ya there. Wooly buggers are just a slight step above a bait dunker rofl.gif

Seabass, welcome to the board. I second Captain's suggestion about staying away from "cheap" online flies...I first ordered from Cabela's years back. After paying for shipping, I could have purchased approximately the same amount of flies, minus a few bucks. Now, I would rather support my local shop. In return, I've gained valuable tips/information of local water and built a friendship that one wouldn't find from an online dealer.

See Bono's selection (hand-tied flies), check out old posts under "Fly Tying & Fly Discussion", and use the "keyword search" for Putah flies...

Hope this helps.

biggrin so indicator nymphing isn't far from bobber fishing!

The biggest fish I caught was on a #10 balck bugger at Putah. Unofficial 26".

IMO, working any streamer correctly is just as difficult as getting the indicator to do its stuff.biggrin

I'm with you on that one! You can catch some hogs with the streamers though.....

Last year I gave up using an indicator after reading an article in CA Fly Fisher about direct contact fly fishing. There's nothing like actually feeling the take instead of watching your indicator bounce. (I will still use one on big water like The Yuba or Lower Sac though)
