east walker/ yuba run 4-10-4-12

Three of us made a run to the East Walker last Friday and Saturday, then hit the Yuba on the way home on Sunday.  I had never fished the East Walker before.  We fished the Nevada side at Rasaschi Ranch.  It reminded me of a desert version of Putah.  It was pretty small water, with tons of brush around the banks.  Lots of stickers and thorns made bank hopping tough.  There were many, many snags when nymphing because of sticks, branches, etc. in the water.  The fishing was pretty good.  We landed some nice brownies and rainbows.  They were good fighters as well.  The dry fly fishing was not on yet, it was strictly nymphing.  We were treated to a nice private air show from the boys at Fallon one day.  Two sets  of 2 A-6 Intruders buzzed about 500 feet over our heads just hauling butt after one another , contour flying down the valley. Pictures below are from the East Walker.  If you want to get away from it, this is the place.

Yuba was happening, many large fish rising, but we could not get tuned into what they were chasing subsurface.  The three of us landed one fish between us.  I must have changed rigs 25 times.  Changed bugs, depths, patterns and just could not get on the same page as the fish.  I spoke with a lot of other people on the river, and it seemed to be the theme of the day.  I was surprised to see only 2 other cars when we got there at 10 AM, and traffic was very light on the river all day.  It felt great to fish in 90 degree weather though!!!!

Sounds like a great trip oneweight. That was defenitly my experince on the yuba last weekend as well. I think i know what they were taking now after alot of thought. It was the egg laying female may fly's that ride in the film, not the flying males that i saw everywere. A compara-dun would have been the ticket. Hind sight is always 20/20. Of course i could be totally wrong on this.

Nice fish oneweight, I was on the Yuba for a few hours saturday afternoon and there were lots of big fish rising. Got into a few of those on the dry and stuck quite a few nymphing before I found the risers. Great action but man was it crowded up there saturday luckily most of the yuba fisherman on weekends are 90%ers.
