3/21 Yuba - Man I love these fish!!!!!

I made another run to the Yuba today.  Fished above the bridge area.  I ran into Matt R. in the parking area at the beginning of the day.  Fishing was very slow in the AM.  I probably spoke to 10 people on the river and no one had any action at all, except for Matt R.  He hooked up when we were working the opposite sides of the same area of river.  I was able to whip out my digital in time to get an action shop of his hookup from across the river!!!  It's posted below.  U da man Matt!!!!

Anyhow, around 1:00, I decide to head for the car to move downriver to another spot,  being that nothing is happening whatsoever above the bridge.  On my way down to the car I'm making my way across the river, I notice some March browns and PMD's in the air.  Within about 2 minutes a couple of fish begin rising.  More bugs, then more.  Fish begin rising all over, and I mean large fish as well as smaller ones.  It was the best rise I have seen on the Yuba in some time, probably since the flood.  I was surprised to see so many large fish rising after bugs that weren't that big.  I switched to a March Brown dry, with a PMD dry tied off of that.  I got a dinker immediately.  A couple minutes later, a nice 18 1/2" er on the March Brown (size 12).  A couple of minutes later a 15"er on the PMD (size 14).  These were the two hardest fighters I have ever caught on the Yuba.  The first guy took me just short of the backing, the second took less but made a good run.  I lost a nice fish about 15 minutes later.  I have pictures below.  Look at how fat these guys are, they have been chowin' down on the skwalas, that's for sure.  The darker fish has a very bloated belly that you can see in the picture.  The smaller guy is just about oval!  By the way, yes, the skwalas are done. The fly that worked so well two weeks ago produced nothing today, even during the great rise. An afternoon wind came up and pretty much ended the rising around 2:15 , but there were sporadic risers that continued until about 3:00.

There was a bit of a "crowd" today, about 12-15 guys working above the bridge.  The river has cleared up substantially from a couple of weeks ago.  It is now relatively clear water.

I am a golf addict as well and I've finally come to realize a wonderful thing about fly fishing vs. golf.  When we play golf for 4 1/2 hours and have 1 1/2 hours of good golf during this time, it's a lousy day.  When we fly fish for 6 1/2 hours and have 1 1/2 good hours of fishing, it can be a good day?????????!!!!!

Nice meeting you oneweight, glad you got into some of those hard fighters they really are some hard frickin fighters. You know that one spot we last talked at when you were heading back down we fished nymphs in that fast water and there were alot of fish in there. Landed 4 and lost a few epic battles. All good and fat fish. Between me and my buddy we hooked into over 12 fish in there in a farely short time. Sounds like mid afternoon the bite is on.
