I'm curious to hear what weight rods some of you guys use when fishing the lower yuba ? I have been using a 6 weight but my 4 weight is so freakin sweet and i just got a new line for it, I'm going with the 4 weight with dry's this weekend and 6 weight for nymphing, I do not like to carry 2 rods but I dont feel the 4 weight will do everything that i may need to do.
im going with a 6 weight this weekend. I would use my 5 weight, but I lost all the fly line. So one rod for me....which is good, cuz now i cant forget my second rod when i walk the banks.
i used to roll out there with my fast action 6wt, i was way way over matched for those fish, but i love using my medium action st croix 5wt, and i have a blast with it. you and i both have hooked some screamers out on the yuba, you might be a lil undermaned with a 4wt, but i think you can use it on both nymphing and dry flies. thats my personal opinion. i know you pound the fish on putah with it, without any problems, i dont think you would have any problems handling a yuba trout on your 4wt. it would be fun as hell to fight a yuba trout on a 4wt.
again just my opinion. but we all know it has been wrong sometimes. hahaha

Yuba can get windy..I like to use a rod that I can false or roll cast very well in the wind..For me that would be a 6wt 9ft fast action or a 6wt 9 1/2 med action...I personally would not use a 4wt cause Im under the delusion I might catch one of those one on a million yuba steelhead...
I usually bring two rods when fishing bigger rivers. I bring a 5wt and a 6wt. I do most of my fishing with the 5wt, but the 6wt is there when the wind picks up.
I recently picked up a 4wt, but it's a noodle rod (TFO Finesse Series). I don't think I would fish it on bigger waters unless I knew the wind was going to be minimal.

I'm bringing my Sage XP 6wt, it's 9'6" and handles the wind and long casts great....or the 5wt maybe if wind isn't in the forecast. I don't like to carry 2 rods and I definitely don't like to leave an extra in the car.
If there's any wind, you want a 6 weight for sure, esp for nymphing. A lot of water haul casts and you need to be able to move a lot of line to get those long dead drifts. 5 weights are awesome to catch Yuba bows on, but in the wind, they can hamper your success.
No wind, 5 weight for sure.
Egg bite, better bring your 6 or that salmon you hook by accident will cost you your flies.
I've used a 9' 3wt, a 9' 5wt and a 9' 7wt. Hook a big hot fish on the 3wt and you loose. I used the 3wt for a couple of years as it was all I had other than a 9wt which was too big. Ten lb fish on a 3wt in the Yuba...hahahaha...how fast can you run?
5wt was just about perfect. With rare exception it was chuck and duck for me so wind wasn't much of an issue even with the 3wt
