Old photos of Putah Creek
Permalink

Hello Board, I'd first like to say hi to those that I have meet at the Creek, Otter, Bugger and everyone else I've had the pleasure to meet. While I'm still very green to the Creek my days there have started to become productive. When I can figure out how to do it, I will post a pic of some of my fish. But the main reason for this post is a friend of mine showed me some photos of his family on vacation at Putah Creek in the late 40s early 50s. I'm not sure exactly where all the pics where taken but a few shots look somewhat familiar. The fish are all big like they are now, and in those days they keep most everything to eat. The problem is I'm not sure how to get all this on the site. I am working on it now but not very very savey with the computer. I will get them on as soon as possible, I think everyone would enjoy them. Thanks,    Brunocarp

That would be cool if you could get them on here, but I don't think people would enjoy pictures of big rainbows on a stringer.

That would be very cool. It's possible that those pics predate the dam, maybe even include portions of Monticello or other areas that are now under Berryessa. There's some history and a few pics here:

the dam was built is 1957. before that it was the putah river. It raged in the winter and almost dried up in the summer,so i have read.

If you can scan them, they can be emailed to Keith Bigelow and he can post them. You could also post the scans as images, like others do of fish pics, in a reply box, using the attach images check box

If you can scan the pics send them to Keith at keith@webdesignbykeith.com. I think most of us started out bait fishing and wouldn't mind seeing a stringer from the old days. When I was a youngster a DFG truck pulled up at Donner Lake and dumped hundreds of planters right in front of us. We had a stringer of 20 fish in no time. Glad to hear you are figuring out Putah!!

I just posted my first pic on the forum the other day and I can say the easiest way I've seen is to spend 5 mins and create an account at www.photobucket.com there you can upload pics, after you upload them you can get an embeded code. Simply copy and paste the embeded code in a forum and bam, pics

Otter, I was talking about wild trout, not planters.

Well I got the pics up thanks to a friend of mine and as you can see they are old. There is a couple of pics that may not be of Putah or at least the Putah we know of. With out the dam as a landmark these could be further up stream. Maybe Bono or his family would recognize them. There are those pics that do look like the creek today as we see it. I'm sure those will be familiar to everyone as I think they are to me. Hope this is enjoyable to all, I know it is to me, I kind of like the old days. Thats my 3rd in the net Putah 'bow, getting better!  Thanks Brunocarp

wow, those are great pics...Putah looked a lot different back then. That was before the dam, so that could be where lake berryessa is now. It's hard to tell.

I agree with you guys, the creek is almost unrecognizeable in those pictures! Look at all those exposed boulders. It looks more like a Sierra fishery. Great pictures and history.  Thanks

I bet it was a lot easier casting back then.... look at all that open area along the bank.

Hello again, thanks for your replys, I'm glad that I was able to share a little bit of history with everyone here. I figured everyone here would enjoy them, knowing how much you all love this wonderful water. My friend is still doing some research on possible locations of the pics, he seems to think they are close to Monticello, which is under water now.

These pics are really interesting,a couple of them look like they may be taken near Monticello but the ones with the big pine/fir trees in them could only be in the upper reaches of the creek well above the lake. From what I've been told Putah really didnt have trout in the reaches near Monticello, just smallmouth.Wondering if some of these pics could be Stoney creek which is about 1 hr north of Putah.
