Lower Yuba 2/29 report

Well, I figured since we had an extra day with leap year, might as well spend it fishing.  Headed up to the Lower Yuba early in the morning as I had to make it back to Oracle Arena for the Warrior game Friday night.

Conditions were great, perfect weather.  Started nymphing with skwalas in the morning and worked over 3 areas below the bridge hard.  Switched up nymph packages several times, but no luck.  I turned over a lot of rocks, and I'll tell you what . . . there are a buttload of skwala nymphs under these rocks.  I just think that the hatch hasn't come off yet in big numbers.  I was amazed at the number of skwalas crawling around.  They seemed to be about a size 12.

After mid day some fish began rising and I started throwing dries.  There were a couple of skwalas flying around, as well as a fair number of PMD's, but nothing big as far as a hatch.  I went after some fish rising in the film, but they weren't taking anything I was tossing ( mostly PMD cripples and emergers) .  I'm not sure what was in the water subsurface, but the fish were aggressively feeding.

Finally I figured I'd throw something big, as an attractor.  I went to a size 8 Golden Stone.  Had a take from a large rainbow that I missed immediately.  After another half hour, I got two decent ones, one right after the other.  Both went about 14", but as you can see in the pictures, pretty beefy 14" fish. Great fighters as usual on the Yuba.  I took the pictures with a disposable camera and they came out pretty crappy.  Last time for that act.  It was a good way to end the day before a 2 1/2 hour drive home.  Thankfully the Warriors thumped Philly and made the drive worth it!!!!

I think that the big skwala hatch could still be coming off pretty soon!!!

The other picture is the run where I got these babies.

I stumbled around below the bridge Sat afternoon, saw a few Skawlas flying more crawling, a lot under the rocks. I also tried a few different techniques. Had a couple takes on dry but most were after the swept away stones. It was a little crowded on the north side above.

I'm slowly learning to fish that river, It's a favorite of mine. The yuba trout are the hardest fighting fish i have ever caught pound for pound. There all like little steelheads. I plan to give it a try this weekend if anyones gonna be up there give me a hollar.
