Sunday, 2/17 PU! what's that smell?

Oh, excuse me...that's the skunking I got at the hands of the Pu today.

Arrived mid day, fished 4 hours til dusk. Water is still off color, saw no fish activity. Insect activity picking up.

I tried a variety of midges, pupa and an egg pattern for good measure. Yes, I thru a SJ worm too. Hit four promising spots in about 200 yards to no avail.  It was a beautiful day, but the fish were NO where to be seen...it was actually kind of creepy compared to how "present" the fish have been on my last couple trips out.

Ran into Otter! Pointed out the crazy spike in flows yesterday...if I need an alibi...I'm going with that!

Hey Ed,

I too suffered through a skunking on Sunday. I fished from daylight to 5:00PM starting at the bridge, then around mile marker 1.8 and then around parking area 5, finally back at the bridge. I used basically the same varity of flies.

I did not see a single fish, did not get a single hit, and only spoke to one person who said that they saw any fish.

Yea, it must of been the flows.... In fact, I am blaming not catching any fish since November on the flows or just bad luck from the new 4wt rod I got for Christmas. Either way, I am certain my luck with turn sonner or later! I just want to catch a fish on my new rod.

It's kinda weird how everything just seems to have shut down since the storms around the 1st of the year???????  I have had the same experience my last few trips in early/ mid January.  Granted, a couple of times it was very murky but even as it cleared, just no action.  The thing is, we know they're out there.  Sooner or later, a bite will start, and then the summer deluge begins.

It will be interesting to see what the angler survey shows, since it started in December. Maybe a mid-December-end January or mid-February closure would not be a bad idea, for the spawners and our gas tanks.

I smell it to, I fished about 5 hours sunday and skunked, Not even a hit. Frustrating how the fishing just shut off about the time we got that first big rain. I dont keep a log, but i should, But I also remeber this time last year on the slow side. Maybe a combination of cooler water temps and lack of insect activity. The flows have been better this winter, Last year there were some long periods of them in the 40's.

Fished today from about 9:30 to 3:30. Had one on below the bridge. Looked to be a nice fish but came off. Had another jump straight up out of the water about ten feet away, giving me the fin! Saw JT land a couple of nice ones. Water was low and lots of guys on the water, but it was nice to be out there.
