Comments on the Putah Creek Angler Survey

I have had a number of people ask me various questions about the Putah Creek Angler survey form that is posted near the top of the Forum board.  First, let me explain why the information on these surveys is important and who is using the information.  I, along with a group of concerned Putah Creek anglers, have been working with both the Solano County Water Agency and the California Department of Fish & Game to improve the Putah Creek fishery.  Our desire is to restore the fishery to where it was a decade or so ago.  In order to get action from both of these groups we need to provide them with data about fishing conditions on the Creek.  This is the purpose of the Angler Surveys.  The filled-out surveys are sent to DFG for tabulation and they will be using this information as one part of their determination of the relative "health" of the fishery.

Now, here are some answers to other often-asked questions:

- You should fill out a survey form EVERY TIME you fish Putah Creek.  It is as important to communicate that you were skunked as it is to record catching a 25" native rainbow.

- This survey should be filled out by everyone, no matter whether you are fishing with lures, bait or flies.

- It does not matter how long you fished any particular day.  If you were only fishing for an hour, please fill out the survey.

As one of many anglers who have a strong attachment to Putah Creek, I ask you to please continue to fill-out and send in completed surveys.  Your involvement in this effort will make a major difference in the restoration of this incredible fishery.

Now that Putah is no longer being stocked, I'm thinking the surveys are more important than ever. Particularly the days not worth bragging about. If the numbers of fish caught is consistantly lower than years prior, I assume( well, hope really) DF&G will lower or zero-limit the creek(hopehopehope).

## On Line surveys are down, # of fish reported is down, so you are right about the importance of the reports. Actually, doing the paper surveys is a better choice because they go straight to DFG. PCT is keeping them posted with oral reports from fishers as well. DFG Wild Trout are in full support of the proposed reg changes to year around artificials + C/R. We'll need Letters of Support come early August; they will be available on this Forum site as well as at our PCT site.

Here's a good question.  This came up over the weekend while I was fishing another river up north and had to fill out a survey at the end of the day.  On sat. I LDR'd three fish.  In my opinion those fish should be counted on the survey right?  Those are fish that are in the river and as long as you have a ball park on the size of them then shouldn't they be accounted for?

I'm with CJ on this, If i LDR a fish and get a good look at it and feel I can somewhat acuratly guess its length I usually report it on the survey. Remember to fill out surveys for ALL rivers that have them, Not just putah creek.

IMO, whatever your personal definition of catch is, let that be your guide for what you report. I agree that wherever there is a survey, you should complete one. I would guess that generally 20% of those fishing these waters bother to take the time and complete 90% of the total surveys. I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Current survey link does not have 2017 as an option. I fished Putah this morning for the first time in years. Two in hand, one LDR

I just used the link successfully, years run out from 2017 to 2022. I have preached filling out either the box surveys or the online survey for years. Why? Because it is one of the most painless ways to contribute to the success of the fishery. CDFW uses this data to monitor the health of the fishery and maintain justification of the Wild Trout designation. Please take the time (1 minute) to complete a form at the boxes or here online. Our finned friends are ultimately the benefactors of the effort.

Can someone point me in the right direction...   All the links I ran across only go out to 2016 in the drop down box.

Since I keep a detailed journal I can back date the surveys for approximately 40-trips.  Would love to do my part!
