I chased steelhead on the American River today with Brian Clemens and ChucktheDuck. We ran into Chris Laskodi as well. The fishing was pretty slow, but we got into a few fish. I didn't realize how close the American River was to Dixon. It's not too much further than Putah Creek. I could have caught more fish on Putah, but it was nice to break out the 7wt and fish some bigger water.

Ya fishing on the Ais slow after a holiday weekend due to overfishing.........if you were fishing where i think you were it was very crowded there on sunday.....also fish it be4 weekends itl be much less crowded and much more fishable......
JT, Yeah it is a nice change to fight some beasts although the river is pretty slow and low. Heck I'm surprised Brian didnt catch like 6 or 8 steelhead
hahaha very funny MATT R, actually jt was the only one that landed a steelie, i hooked into 3 fish, 2 of which were monsters, 1 big ass steelie and one big salmon, the other fish was small, atleast thats how it felt. and this time i actually have proof that i hooked into these fish.
as ac22 said. you want to fish this spot before the weekends. this place get hammered bad. when i fished it with wyteurp we had it mostly to ourselves.
ill be back out there on friday, and hey you may never know i could land 6-8 steelies and if i do i will dedicate it to you MATT R.

Both are suitable for steelhead. What I did before my dad bought a fly shop and we acquired more than a few rods we use to own rods every two sizes. We owned a 2wt for small creeks, 4 wt for dry fly fishing, 6 wt for nymphing and light sal****er, 8 wt for steelhead and small salmon, and a 10 wt for big salmon and stripers. This covered pretty much everything we encounter.
So if I'd were you I'd get a 7 wt if I had a 5 and an 8 wt if I had a 6.
No a 5 wt is perfect for trout. It is the #1 selling rod in America. By far the most popular trout size. I think JT does the same thing as me except with a 3, 5, and 7 wt.
