I have been using westfly.com to look at patterns for Putah bugs. I would be curious if you know of others that would be useful to search. Thanks.

I don't know if I have seen either of those, I'll check em out. Flytiersbench.com and I think flytiersindex.com are both a few I have seen in the past. I found those by just googling a pattern. I'll type something like "fly tying micromay fly" and see what comes up. Search the patterns first then you'll hit the jackpot instead of other sites.  Ultimateflytying.com is good too.

Thanks east bay ed!! I would suggest fly tyers go to danica.com and look up Jude Duran's flies. He guides on the San Juan a tailwater very similar to Putah. I thought his flies were top secret.

Way to Ed!!! Those flies would all work on Putah as well. The tailwater emerger is an exact copy of a fly I have caught tons of fish on. I think that guy copied my fly. hahaha Thread and CDC is all it takes. The blood worm midge is also very effective. It is just thread, but it will fool even the smartest trout.

My drowned midge is an off-shoot of that pattern.  Of course I had to make my own little additions.  Here is the drowned midge.  I use a #24 TMC 2487 hook.  It has a Z-lon loop wing, black antron legs, and black thread body.  Just be careful if you fish this pattern.  You will end up with a lot of straightened hooks.

JTs drowned midge definitely works make sure to tie up a lot as you will be dealing with big fish. Straightened hooks and broken tippets can be expected.

There are many ways to fish emergers, but one tip is to get the fly deep then lift it up in the middle of the drift. Another technique is to let the fly dead drift for a while then twitch the fly. When the fly moves the fish attack.

Thanks for the drowned midge JT. I have been playing with a variation using a pearlescent tinsel wing and a sergers thread that can be teased out to form the legs. So far, with my bad hands, I can only get it down to a size 20.

Have you tried using a 2488H, same hook, heavier wire.

It's a similar hook.  The 2487 is the fine wire version of the 2457.  The 2488 and 2488H have a slightly wider gape and a straight eye.  The 2457 and 2488H are only available down to a #22.  When venturing beyond that, I'm stuck with the 2487 and 2488 (if I continue to use Tiemco hooks).
