One of your posts on the Redds thread says:

"being in sac not to many great fishing spots around in this area. i wish i lived closer to nicer fisheries"

Get yourself a good stream map and look around, you live next to a gold mine of fishing. Lower Yuba, Feather, America, Middle Fork of the American out of Foresthill, Truckee, Little Truckee, North Fork Yuba, Haypress Creek, Bear River, Silver Fork, Prosser Creek, Sagehen Creek, Hike into Desolation Wilderness, Pyramid Lake...I could go on and on. Don't limit yourself to Putah as the only close fishing because you're missing out on a lot of water that is much nicer to fish than Putah...all within 2 hours of you.

Most of these places you can go to and be the only person around for milesbiggrin.gif

Places that look like this:

You can find all of those spots and many better ones in the book Fly Fishing the Tahoe Region by Stephen Rider Haggard. The book explains how to find the spots, flies to use and what kind of fish are found.

nice pics

well some of those that you are talkin about are in the mountains, and i dont have 4x4, so those are out of the question. i was in that post refering to fishable waters within an hour like puta., which is the american river, middle fork of the american and north fork american come together at hwy 49 foresthill rd area, and eventually dump into folsom lake, south fork american, silver fork american, yuba and feather are all within about hour and a half, even the truckee, wish there was great fishable water like putah within an hour, thats what i was gettin at. but yes withing 2 hours there are some great areas to fish. and maybe sometime this yr ill give them a try. some of those that you have mentioned i have never even heard of.

None of the places mentioned need a 4x4 to access and only 1 of the pics was a hike into the location...less than a mile.

That's some high water on the LT! last time I fished it was less than 50 cfs.

There are so many places to fish in Northern CA it is unreal.

Keep the good places quiet. smile

Theres so many spots to fish right in our backyard. I fished alot of places this past summer. Heres a few pics i took along the way. Not fish pics really but just some places i thought were cool. I dont take many fish pics. They may be somewhat low quality they were takin with a disposable camera. Brian a 4x4 is not needed at all.

Packrat, That pic with the rainbow in the net is sweet. It looks just like the rainbows I caught on the McCloud a few months ago.

No i have not fished the concercency area. I fished the upper part of the river around lower and middle falls and the fishing was excellent. Also tried way upriver in the mccloud redband area and did not get to catch one of those guys. I'll be making 1 or 2 trips up there this year, Most likely not bother with the upper sac. i preffere the mccloud, I also plan to hit burney falls area, its only about 40 miles away.

Got that right! If you step down too hard they bolt, and I'm not talking while your wading either, when your on dry ground. Not a place for rookies either, you have to have some technical skill with a fly rod to do well there. I think the Truckee is even harder.

Man I love me some Pit rainbows. Haven't been up to the homewaters since May.cry In the time it took me to load these there are more posts.  I love living in the sticks but dial up sucks.  My Pit pic didn't make it,looks like those 3 are Burney Creek.

You think the Truckee is harder?  I've had better luck on the Truckee than the Little Truckee.  The LT is a tough little stream.

Reminds me of the North Fork Stanislaus. If you make any quick movement they dart. I'm talking even if you blink.

JT,  Little Truckee seems harder to fish in mid to late summer once the flows drop, but if you get in there in the spring with flows from 150-200 or so , it's on. Fish spread out all over the place and are usually snappy all day long.
With the low flows you cant be lazy and catch fish, you have to be on top of your game big time.
The main Truckee is my favorite river. Just fished it Jan 2.  hooked and lost a really nice one.  I'm stoked its open all year round now.  nothin like some riding in the morning and fishin in the afternoon.  It aint easy learning that big truckee but way worth it.  it has some big hard fighting fish.

That makes sense.  I've only fished the LT in mid to late summer.  I got into a few fish, but it was tough.  The Truckee was a lot easier for me.  I fished it the same way I would Putah Creek, small flies and all.

If you want to have a lot of fun on the Big Truckee, try going out on a Summer evening right at dusk and stripping the **** out of a leech, matuka or a goblin on a sink tip line, you'll swear you just hooked a freight train! A buddy of mine is a guide in the area and he lives in Tahoe Donner, I was there when he hooked and landed a 32" brown!

He's actually thinking of putting together a snow shoe trip at the end of March, probably to the LT. I'm going to get more info from him at the Pleasanton FF show next month.

     Captian.
I have never fished up there but I hear it is good. I have ben going to the McCloud for 6-7 years now and fish the conservency at least one time. Usually a 3 day trip. Last may we tried where the pacific crest trail runs along the McCloud lust above Ahdnah campground. It was pretty productive the fish were small though 14-16 inch but great fighters. Idont know what the river is like up where you go but down by Ahdnah campground all I can say is fish the edges. Lots of undercut banks with lots of hungry golden stone munchers. Man it is beautifull up there.   biggrin

We can set up a trip there for the summer, I know it pretty well. Like I said, a friend of mine is a guide up there and I've been out with him a few times so I know some good lesser know spots. If you go out with us it could get confusing though, my buddies name is Shawn:)

The Truckee and LT are my homewaters. Great place if you put your time in! This past year was great for dry fly activity. LT was tough at times, but good nonetheless.

Main river, first week of November, #20 WD-40:

Is that the Glenshire Bridge in the background? If it is then that's a great stretch where you are....tends to get pounded though.

That is a great Truckee fish in a great spot at Glenshire!  I fish the big river and the LT alot as well.  We have a place in Truckee that we use quite a bit. I really hit the LT this summer and there are some great fish in that stream as well.  Some ultra heavy pressure during the season, with very educated fish.  When you're pulling 8-10 fish out of the LT, you know you've earned your stripes.
