I have been thinking about trying the Yuba river above the Hwy 20 bridge and was wondering how it is going up there. I have never been there but what I have heard sound good.

It muddy's very easily so call a local fly shop before heading up there. I wouldn't consider the lower yuba an easy place to fish. But the trout in there fight like some kinda crazed turbo charged madman of a trout !
ya a trout on roids, they all have roid rage i tell ya. me and cappy know all about that.

Well I like trout that are pumped up and thats what i have heard about them. Its nice to know that it muddys up easy. So I guess it needs some time after rain. you say it isnt easy to fish. Harder than putah?

i would have to say yes, if you have never fished it. i was lucky enough to go with captain who has fished it a few times. and we all hooked into fish.

I'll have to agree on that. I caught one that fought like a salmon. Unfortunately, Brian and Captain ditched me, so they never saw it. Brian did see the 2 small ones I caught at the end of the day though.
i remember to telling me that you hooked into one where i was fishing when i crossed in that upper section. it was behing the log that was in the water, that had a lil tail out section then it dropped into about 3-4 ft of water right after that log, i hooked a rocket ship in that same hole, the same hole to you also caught a rocket ship, same fish who knows, that one that i hooked was about 18-20, and took off fast.

I don't find Putah to be particularly hard to fish if you know what you're doing. Fishing the Yuba isn't tricky at all if you're there on an "on" day. You could do great one day and not even get a bite the next day. Reading the water and figuring out where the fish will hold is key to the Yuba. Here's the 1 tip that will help with success; before wading halfway out into the river, fish the first 10 feet from the bank out before even getting your feet wet. Most of the fish I have caught there came from just off the bank, many in the first 2 feet out from shore! The fish fight very hard for their size too. I'd say the average size fish is in the 14 to 16 inch range with the occasional 18 incher.
I dont know if I will be able to sleep at night untill I get to fish the yuba. This all sound great. How about The set up for this time of year. I was thinking Stone flys I heard the skwala is the way to go? stimulators, BWO's, maby some Foxs Pupah. Glo bugs. How does this sound? am I missing anything?

The lower yuba just has so much water to cover on foot, A drift boat would be a huge advantage. My problem was I was pretty damn new to fly fishing my first few trips to that river and I got seriously schooled, I'm sure I ammused some onlookers the first time I ever tried to work with a heavey sinktip line up there, To this day I don't know how I didnt dig at least one fly out of head. I'm sure my success would be a little better now .
That was one of the rivers on my list to go see. We've got a place in Nevada City which is close. Tooled around on the north fork a bit. Beautiful area for sure.
