The book: Fish Food by Ralph Cutter
The DVD: Bugs of the Underworld by Ralph Cutter

I have both. If you read the book and watch the DVD I can almost guarantee you will change the way you fish. The DVD especially gives you an underwater view of what "real" nymphs look like in their natural environment. Many of the things we do with our nymphs look nothing like the real thing. He gives some great ways to really make your bugs look and act more like real thing. The video footage is amazing, all shot underwater with scuba gear. The book is a quick, easy read that will also open your eyes to a lot of new things.

I highly suggest both!

I can't wait to pick it up.  I was reading about the DVD a couple weeks ago.  Ralph and Lisa Cutter are special people who have devoted tons of time to make fishing better in California.  He has been diving rivers for a long time and I am willing to bet a lot of the footage comes from the Truckee.

Sounds good, I'll be picking those up. Are they mostly west coast waters ? I have been watching a great video called the underwater world of trout and I'll defenitly say that watching and studying underwater video will change the way you fish I guarentee it.

I'll check for the Bugs of the Underworld DVD tomorrow at the shop and see if I can get the name of the Crowley DVD showing midge footage. Even without audio, the midge clips are very revealing of just how often our flies truly appear (not attempting to sound redundant) "artificial" compared to an ascending pupa. Watching this footage makes me wonder as a FF and while tying what approaches I can take on the water and what materials would best create a natural fly.

Hey Packrat,
Sounds like a great video. I was wondering if the DVD gives any tips and techniques on nymphing. Im somewhat new to flyfishing and could use some help on my techniques, such as getting proper drifts. Any other recommended videos?

It doesn't really give info on how to fish but it's more about what's going on under the water with bugs. I still highly recommend it even if it's not really an instructional DVD, you will still learn tons of useful info.
