Hey folks, any of you venture off into these rivers? I might be looking to head up there Jan. 1-2. Any news/notes/suggestions. I have looked at all the other reports online and found they were from over a month ago....Sporting goods stores and fly fishing stores have old info anyway....JS
this is a tough one, i havent fished it since early sept. it fished good then, you fish it like putah with an indicator or high stickin it, small flies, not real small but 16-20s work good, for the those that dont budge you could try 22s, but with it being cold, you might stick with the bigger side of flies, if you have a 4x4 there is some nice areas you can hit, but can only do it with 4x4. oh ya thats the east carson by the way.
if you need anything just pm me, i cant be to much help but i know the carson fairly well, summer and early fall time never winter, but hey it might help you out

yeah, I fished the east carson---nevada side in october and I caught fish after fish after fish(october caddis under huge orange dry fly--forget the name). A guide took me and we did really well....Thanks for the info. Brian, i better fire up the 4X4 next week and get out my parka....JS
its definitly a stimulator, dry fly dropper combo is killer up there, during the summer and early fall, hopper dropper combo bust them up too, as far as dropper fly, 18-20s, maybe 16s like i stated before, bwos, midges, wd-40s, hares ear, birdsnest, pheasant tail, also flashback as well in the pts, all tan or olive, midges-zebra or red.
hope this helps, you will need more than a parka up there right now, heated socks, beenie, gloves, heated fleece, man its gonna be cold,
good luck, hope you pound them.
aka new guy pm sent

Kaufman's stimulator was right...good call....the only downfall was that I had to purchase a nevada fishing license...about 20 bucks....you guys got me all giddy and ready to go freeze my potatoes off...js
that spot i told you about you dont need a nevada license

I hope you realize that alot of those mountains passes and roads are closed for the year. Its way to cold to drive all the way over there in the snow, the fishing is not gonna be very good with water temps. in the 30's and 40's. I spent 5 days fishing the west, east, and little walker rivers last summer and it's was freakin awesome baby !!!!!!! I'm gonna do it again this summer.
Thanks, captain....I will definitely check on the road conditions....I guess the day I spent there in October has me all jacked up to get there again....might be the wrong time......I can let my mind do the fishin this time of year...then go kill them this summer/fall....JS
I agree with Captain. I got pretty excited when I found out some of the good waters to fish are now open all year. There are five or six notable rivers now open. The funny thing though is they all suck in the winter. At least the ones at elevation. The Upper Sac has been open for 3-4 years now and it fishes terrible in the winter. The reports from the Truckee as of yesterday where reeeaallly slowing down. Think of how slow Putah has been and we don't even have snow down here. But hey good luck if you go. You can't catch em if you don't try right! Steelhead fishing eh?
Just got back from the Reno/Truckee area. The Truckee in the Verdi area was running nice however it had a nice ice flow going. Didn't see anyone out fishing the Truckee along the 80 corridor. The temps while I was there the last couple of days were in the low teens at night and about 30 as the high for the day. Also got some light snow.
I didn't fish while I was up there, however I did visit the new Cabelas in Boomtown. Saw some beautiful fish in the aquarium. They have some really nice size trout in there which satisfied my appetite for fishing.
Around Thanksgiving, I was up around the East and West Carson rivers. The roads at that time were still open. The West Walker was essentially frozen over with some small areas of exposed water flowing. It looks like a nice piece of water to fish when it's ice out.
The East Carson in the Hangman's bridge area was real low. There also was some ice at that time along the banks. As the sun got higher in the sky, you could hear it crackling and breaking up.
I did see a few folks heading down to the water and heading downstream to fish while I was there. Not sure how they made out. I hope to fish those waters next year during the summer or fall.
If you decide to head up in those areas, dress warm and of course check out which roads are open etc.
A good fallback position is to bring your wallet and hit Cabelas.
I have heard that cabelas store is awesome, Like a museum. I must admit I am feining for a trip to the sierra's but this is just not the time. Especially if you go alone. Save those days for this summer and fall, I cant wait to take a few 5 day trips up there again. Were just lucky to have putah to fish. Cole, i fished the upper sac. in october and it was very slow, And it was very cold, And i fell in .
Dude I go in a couple times a year. You're not doing it right unless you slip once in awhile. If there are fish to find the harder I'm wading. I feel like I need two staffs sometimes. My favorite river is also my hardest relationship as far as that goes but well worth it.
The Cabelas store is great. The Reno store is about 125,000 square feet. I also have been to the one in PA which is 250,00 square feet. That store was awesome also.
The fly fishing area in the store is not huge. For those who tie flies they had tons of different tieing materials. Much more space is directed towards spin/bait casting equipment/tackle.
At this time, the fly selection was somewhat limited. In talking with one of the folks there, they indicated that they had many more flies coming in.
A good piece of the Reno store was allocated towards hunting(gun/bow). Tons of equipment. Also the store had a wide selection of clothing/boots and a large camping equipment area.
The highlights for me (after scouting out the fly fishing area) was the aquarium with the large fish and the stuffed wildlife displays(elk, deer, mountain lions, bear etc.)
If anyone is in that area, it's definitely worth a stop.
I agree with Captain(at least for myself), that this isn't the time of year to be fishing up in the Sierra's. However when you see the Truckee flowing, it sure is enticing.
I myself am not one to enjoy fishing while de-icing the rod tip continually.
