Fished the Creek on Monday 12-10. Started at the bridge with only 1 other car in the parking area. Immediately my buddy and I started hooking up on LARGE fish. The thing is they also got off as quick as they were hooked, about 6 between the 2 of us ALL LARGE fish. Moved to another location and we both got the Putah Surprise! I won't say where or what we were using but was a first for both of us on Putah Creek! I can't post pics for some reason but I sent them to the webmaster for uploading so you'll have to wait to see them. The pics will speak for themselves. We both were into double digits. Most were wild fish with the average size of about 14 and a few holdover planters. Later in the day my buddy hooked into a monster at #5 that was on for about 3 seconds but we got a great look at it, easily 20+ inches and it was one of the pale colored fish guys have been seeing.
Hope the pics get up soon because I'm sure you'll all enjoy our surprise!
Never mind, the upload worked....no waiting for the surprise!
Packrat, thats a nice suprise alright. I used to catch browns at #5 many years ago but they seem to have moved on. I might have seen you there yesterday. I stopped at # 5 for about an hour after fishing further up the creek for most of the day. I pulled a lot of stockers out of that hole that I was at when I saw you guys. Nice report.
Yeah, that was us that asked if you minded if we fished below you in that spot on #5. We pulled a lot of fish out of there too but only a few were stockers. The browns didn't come from #5 but somewhere else further up. The biggest fish of the day that was hooked but not landed came from a very small pocket just on the other side of the dead fall tress below where we were fishing.
wow some browns, thats is a great day. and decent size ones as well. how many browns did you happen to catch that day. just those 2 or where they more. i have never hooked into a brown. one of these days i hope.
awsome packrat. wish i was fishing with you guys, just to see the browns. i have never even seen browns. did you catch them on dries or nymphs.

What a day, Packrat ! Nice pic too. A couple fly fisherman I talked to on the creek mentionned catching a brown on Putah in the last year. I was sceptical, I guess, but now... Does anyone know if or when they stopped planting browns at Putah and lake Solano?
There had been comment on another thread about the viability / long term prospects for the brown population on Putah. While I don't know much about all that ... those are beautiful, mature but young looking fish! They must be reproducing on the creek.
Really exciting for you, and thanks for sharing with us!

Very nice catches. Must of been really shocking for you. I know when I first went to Putah, I was excited to hook some Browns, but after talking with a few people I realized they are very rarely caught. Are there just really small numbers of them?
those are some young native browns, so put 2 and 2 together and that means they are spawning somewhere. but where. that is the question. its probably good we dont know, but just knowin that they are spawnin is a great thing. but by the pics they must be. lets hope they keep it up.

Totally agreed, they're definetly wild fish, sorry if I wasn't clear. I was just trying to get a feeling for how good are they at spawning at Putah, since we don't see more of them. Maybe they can spawn, but if the survival rate is very low and very few of that new generation live long enough to spawn the next generation, we probably face a declining population. I really hope not, but...
If you know about browns then you know they can be very hard to fool with an artificial. They are a very spooky and finicky trout. Browns are voracious meat eaters and prefer a meaty meal over insects. Also during the day they don't feed much, browns are very early morning and evening feeders but if you know how to specifically target for browns you will catch them. We were not fishing the obvious holding areas and we used a fly most guys wouldn't think of using on Putah. Don't ask though because I won't say what fly we used but both browns came on the same fly pattern. If you fish the Truckee and are familiar with Truckee flies you might be able to guess the fly. This fly is also deadly on the East Walker! If someone can guess the pattern correctly I will fess up and confirm it.
If you know where to look and what time of the year to look you will see browns ....I saw a few this year setting up to spawn...out of the 50+ days I fished putah this year I only had 4 caught and landed...One of those was only 9 months old at the most...the others where well over 22"....almost ever brown I have ever caught on putah has been on the same few flys... those are nice fish and good to see someone find a few once and a while...lets hope they get it on and make some babies...
Cool fish Packrat, I have ALWAYS wanted to catch one of these elusive critters since the day I saw the images of the ones Gregs holding on his website (I still think it's a photoshop, no way browns can be THAT big?)
i would guess a blood worm or a hare's ear flashback, thats my guess

Damn MattR, that was my exact guess until I scrolled down and saw your guess. So I'll go way out on a limb hear and guess a large stonefly nymph, Or a dragon fly nymph. I looked for any spawners this past october and november and didnt see any spawning browns, #5 is were i have heard they are.
that stuff you see in the middle pic is white stuff that is on the water, either foam, bubbles or something, thats why white indicators work so well. but ya not the fly trust me i was lookin really really hard too.

You were at rock 132 on Access xxx lower part. I would say that the fly is a z-wing, bird of prey or a crawdad.
One of your 3 guesses is somewhat close. We were not near #5 when we got the browns.
None of the guesses by the other guys is anywhere what we were throwing to fool the browns:)
SCM guess correctly via PM and I confirmed it like I said I would. I'm willing to bet I could sell a bunch of these flies to you guys so you could take a shot at a Putah brown;)
well good thing he didnt post what he said. oh well back to the drawing board.

The planter rainbow is definitely at rock 132. The fly has to be a small packrat.
That rainbow was by no means a planter! It was a healthy 18 inches and all fins and tail were perfect. That fish was caught at the lower end of #5 on a size 20 Olive RS2. Trust me, when you get a planter at Putah, you know it's a planter, that was not. I caught some fish that day that had the top half of their tail missing and no pec fins, those are planters.
