I've been fishing Putah since July with my friend. He put me on fish the first time I used a fly pole seriously. I hooked up with 20+ fish and landed about a dozen. I was happy as hell. BUT. . . my partner wasn't because we were'nt catching "natives".
I got skunked the last two times I went out with my partner, but I didn't give up. I wanted to hook up with a "big ol' native".
Today was the day. I felt like "Mr. Bojangles" with all my gear, wading stick, net around my neck . . . I fished like him too. Nothing but a near miss until about 3pm . . . and then wham! I set the hook and it jumped showing me immediately I had something BIG and COLORFUL.
I fought it carefully and almost lost it when it stiffened up as I netted it and it flipped out. I luckily had a good hook-up and netted it successfully the second time.
It was a nice native around 18-20" and worth the wait, I must say.
Good fishing and happy holidays to all of you, especially those of you who recently cleaned the creek and helped clear trails while you were at it. It made things better for me today. I hope to join you next year.

way to go bob, way to get those pigs. hey how did you like the higher flow. i loved it but fishing it a day after the flows went up was tough. water was semi murky made it a lil tough but cleared up towards mid day. well keep it up youll get that allusive putah pig soon enough.

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
That's a great report, natives are addicting, now you can see why your buddy seeks them out. Looks like you'll be passing this on to your buddy as times move on.
We're so lucky to have this fishery right smack in the middle of everything. With $100 a barrel oil on the near horizon the days when I was flying up and down at 90 MPG to the Upper Sac each weekend are almost over...besides I NEVER caught as many fish on the Upper Sac as I do here;)
Very true shark diver, This past spring and summer i fished the following rivers, upper sac. twice, mccloud, east, west, and little walker, Several different stretches of the middle fork stan. silver fork american, south fork stan. north fork stan. clark fork, mosquito lakes, north fork moklumne, and several other small sierra streams. Some of these rivers I fished on several occasions, and every trip was great in its own way, and alot of fish were caught and the scenery is amazing. That being said I will rank putah right up there with the best of em. Putah creek has some special fish in it. I just hope it stays that way.
