This is the first time I've been compelled to post. I fish Putah regularly and some of you have probably seen me out there.
Back to the report. I did pretty well yesterday. The higher flows have helped the fishing quite a bit. The real reason I am posting this report is because the 'sporting' fly fishermen are already snagging the fish off the beds. I went up to the bridge to start to check out the spawning fish, and they haven't started spawning yet but are beginning to pair off. This didn't stop people from trying to get the few fish that made the mistake of going into the shallows. I saw several fish snagged in the butt/back which people then fought for ten minutes instead of breaking the fish off. I landed a couple of bigger fish and both had flies stuck in their body.
I then went down to the deer xing sign which has the big spawning bed and saw even worse. A pair of guys were down there just watching for a fish to move up onto the bed. They would then cast with a yarn-type fly, not a glo-bug, the same type that people use to line steelhead on the American. I watched them for about ten minutes as they dragged the hook over the shallow water and twitched it when they got near the fish. If thats not snagging, I don't know what is. I talked to the guys about fishing and they said they do this all the time and learned about this from a guide. I won't say his name but it wasn't Greg Bonovich.
Didn't see anyone get any of the spawners in the mouth, which isn't suprising since they have absolutely no interest in feeding. I think everyone should consider not fishing for any of these larger fish if they are in less than a foot of water or you can see them easily. These fish are all either spawning or getting ready to spawn so should be left alone. Besides they fight like logs. Good news is I did quite well in faster water, not as many large fish but plenty of fish to 16" and they didn't fight like logs.
i dont think bono would show someone how to snag. very very unlikely, thats not bonos style one bit.
either way there are snaggin and thats illegal. hope i dont see anything like that going on on tuesday.

Good report Chris, Do you buy any chance drive a silver mazda car ? I too witnessed both spin and fly fisherman targeting big bows on redds today. A guy landed one with a spinner, And i ain't talkin bout a rusty spinner or the like. Not sure if he snagged it or if it took the spinner, Anyways he released the fish after handling it for way to long. I then witnessed several guys with fly rods (i won't call them flyfisherman) Try over and over to catch these fish. Guys they do not want to feed right now !!!!!!!!!!! As i made my way back to the car at my crossing point i came upon once again another guy fly fishing for these same trout, I said to him, Hey have you seen all those big fish in there, He said nope, He then asked me if they were spawning, I told him they were and he said and I quote "oh i better move on and leave em alone" He then told me he was new and didnt know. I could tell he was being honest, I then asked him how fishing was and he said he's working on his presentation today and it was lookin good. Now thats the kinda guy i hope to see again sometime on the creek. If ya happen to read this, Just keep at it man. Now back to fishing, Not a bad day but not a good day, 3 fish to hand 2 12 inchers and a really fat 17 inch hen, I bet she was full of eggs, Very healthy hard fightin girl. A few more fish lost and a few more missed strikes. All fish hit various midges patterns size 20 and smaller. Oh and GOD DAM IT WAS COLD !
well what do you know you go without me and you catch fish. so i guess next time i go out its either gonna be a skunk for me or i am gonna have a nice day.
sorry to say this but come on how do you not see those fish there. that is the biggest lie i ever heard. i hope that he was tellin the truth but seriously you can see them almost from the road without glasses. its rediculas.
well again hope i do good on tuesday. and man does anyone want to join me. i dont mind fishin on my own but i hope i dont see any snaggers and i am by myself, well the better hope they dont come across me.
well ill tell you how it goes on weds

The way the light has been shining on that area has made it diffucult to spot fish. that side of the river isn't getting much sun, and when it does the water gets a yellow or orange color to it, And of course every freakin indicator i have is yellow or orange, There actully well used dirty old indicators now, The way they should be. Did I mention i lost my $200 fishin shades at the creek cleanup ! But yes brian those fish were much harder to see today, also because it was windy, wich put a chop on the surface.
well thats good about the chop, makes your indicator harder to see on the water in the fishes eyes. hopefully someone will find those shades. who knows. man wish you had tuesday off. i think next friday me and wyterp might be gettin together to do some fishing.
we shall see. any pointers you can give me for tuesday. ill be gettin some flies finally, goin to kienes and pickin up a couple dozen, and forcepts and shot. and if they arent to expensive i want to pick up a net. but we shall see about that.

Get small midges or rs2's. Size 20 to 24. When you buy shot get the good shot, its really soft and crimps down much better vthen the harder cheap shot. I have been using a 1/2 gram shot above my midges, beadhead and non beadhead.
so 1/2 gram, ya i got the cheap shot from walmart worked good but a pain to get off when it came time to decrease the weight. can you believe i was using 2 shot all day that day. and did you realize i cought fish with the 2 shot. did you know i was using 2 shot. well i guess for next time if you didnt. i was using one to begin with. and within 5 casts of putin the second one on, i caught my first fish. you know what they always ask?
when should i change a spot or flies
first you always change leader length, then you shot, then a lil bit of both, then flies, then change to a different spot. i was playin with leader length for most of the day, but once i realized that 2 shot was the ticket then it was just adapting to the length i needed on the leader and i think i did ok for what was handed to me.

Captain, what you described was not what happened. These guys were totally aware of what they were doing. I do the same thing you do because some people really have no clue and just need to be informed and most will stop. I drive a silver Tundra with a giant dent in the door thanks to a hit and run so that wasn't me you saw.
I'm glad to see a lot of you guys do your part to 'inform' people of their behavior.
Good luck out there the fishing is just going to get better over the next month!
the day of the clean up, i was walkin up past access 2 a lil ways and low and behold camoed out fisher, not knowing i can see him but he cant see me, tosses out his line lets it set for a few then reels up the slack. i asked him what he was using. oh i am using power bait. i asked if he knew the date. ya its the 17th. and i said ya it is and dont you know that after the 15th its off limits to all bait, so you cant fish with bait. he said oh i didnt know. and he just kept sittin there. i walk another say 10 yrds and he didnt move. so i asked are you gonna keep fishing. oh no i am looking through my box to see what i can fish with. (he had a bucket and everything) i also kindly said that you cant use barbs and he goes single hooks too right. and what am i gonna say NO. i was like ya that too single hooks no barbs and catch and release only. he said thanks. and i told him not a problem just tryin to keep your pocket full for christmas and for you to keep your gear, you had an easy 1000 dollar fine on your hands and all your gear gone. needless to say after that he reeled in his stuff really fast. i fished a few spots above him just to keep an eye and sure enough he was using lures of some sort barbless i aint that good single hook. well i think he got the point.
thats the only problem i have had other than all the fly fisherman that were fishing the day of the clean up tellin me there is trash everywhere like here there and over on that side. i was like cool you wanna help. he said thanks and i was like we have it every yr the weekend after the 15th. you should try it some time.
other than that nothing yet. but i bet ill see some on tuesday and ill make my presents known. no worries lil fishy buddies i got your slimmy, drag buzzin, fly keepin, aerobatic arsses. i got your backs. (thats to the fish of putah by the way)

wow, i guess so. i tell you what though sometimes i sure dont feel like one on putah. it really makes you wonder how good you really are sometimes.
but i guess thats cool that i am a guru know. i know there are many on here that deserve it more than it do.
so ill take it with a grain of salt.

Chris, Welcome aboard, and thank you for your post. I love to hear that other people are out there taking care of the creek. The future of the creek depends on all of us.

Hey Chris thanks for the post, and you're right the supposed guide who supposedly taught those two knuckleheads how to snag fish definately was not me!I teach my clients how to kill spawners by using a gill net or in a pinch just throwing rocks...Anyway great info on you're post keep it up.With this site as our soap box we all really can make a change for the positive and I believe already have.Bono
Yesterday I found something odd. The last three weekends I have been watching these spawning fish in a very shallow easily accessible spot clearly visible from the road. I have watched so many people try to catch these fish both fly and spin guys, old guys, young guys, and everything in between. But now suddenly they are GONE, I saw a few sat. but yesterday they were no wear in sight. They also have been getting hammered by big birds so maybe that has something to do with it. Only one I have seen actually caught or snagged not sure, It wass a guy using a spinner and spinning rod sat. morning. So if you read this your a moron.
I've been thinking about that a lot Captain. It was really strange to see that spot utterly devoid of spawners when we've been seeing them there for a month. Real strange. It could have been that osprey that was dive bombing the hole. Those fish were REALLY big though. I find it hard to believe that the osprey could of taken all of them. Another thought I had was that with the high flows they moved further up stream. What does everybody else think?
I have seen a family of otters moving along the creek, but not in the area you guys are speaking of. I am sure otters have a fairly wide range, so I wonder if they could have come through the area and pushed the fish into cover. Those had to be the biggest bows' I have ever seen. Given there size I doubt a bird of prey wrangle them out of the water.
i actually saw a hawk have a good size trout in its talens, i would have to say atleast 18 inches, i have seen them have salmon in there talens as well. but otters could have scared them out. i saw a family of what was it cappy about 8 or so in that area we like to fish. so that could be. who knows. ill check it out tomorrow and post to let you know if they are back or not.

The reason they leave is that people are targeting them. The flow changes also have some effect on them. The spot most of you are talking about used to have fish from one side of the creek to the other side. I would say 50 feet across and 50 fish wide. The fish are pushed into the frog water or into the upper or lower riffles.
I was at the rv park/bridge on Sat afternoon and noticed a older white pickup with a shell carrying advertising on the back for guide service. I may have seen it last year. There was a @#$load of spawners in the turn below the bridge. I am not happy, and I am about to get rude on the Creek. I am ready to break some rods. Sorry, but I've been semi polite, but it often goes over their heads. Again, if you see anything weird, go to Solano Lake ranger station and report these people. They will get sick of hearing about it and start really nailing em. As for the so called fly dudes, remember the ones I saw with a white 2dr Honda? I'm sure they'll be back for more.
