Fly Fishing Noob

Hey everyone. I just started to get into fly fishing. I have gone 3 times now, and I am starting to get a hang of casting and such by watching others. Luckily, my parents bought a membership at Canyon Creek, so we have been going there alot lately. I love it! Anyways, here is my questions. When do I use a indicator? What kind is the best? What size leaders should I keep in stock? What flies should I get to fish putah? I really want to get into fly fishing, but still have yet to catch a fish on my fly pole, lol. Please let me know so I can get a nice collection that works. Also, I got a pair of waders for my float tube, but they have no boots. Can I buy some waterproof boots for them? Its no fun not being in the water, and wasting your time in the trees.biggrin Thanks!

I like poly-yarn indicators.

Leaders - 9-foot tapered are fine with a 5x or 6x tippet size. A tapered leader isn't necessary for nymph fishing.

Flies, wow, where to start...you could browse some of the past fishing reports for fly suggestions. Here are some nymphs (size #16 to #20) I use: pheasant tail, zebra midge (black and olive), Foxs poopah (tan and green), disco midge, zug bug, serendipity, micro mayfly, and WD40s. I would add a stock of olive and black wooley buggers size #10 and #12. I usually carry very few dry flies (size #14 to #18): elk hair caddis, yellow humpy, stimulator, blue wing olive, dark cahill, and royal coachmen.

Any pair of wading boots should work fine. Be sure to get felt soles with metal studs. Metal studs are a necessity in my opinion.

Good luck!
