Hit the creek at Noon and fished till dark......a few bait fishermen, but not too bad as far as being over-crowded for a nice Friday afternoon. I tried my usual favorite patterns for this time of year and the fish seemed keyed in on my #24 RS2 with no weight attached. When I tie up these small RS2's, I like to wrap a couple of turns of very fine silver wire...don't know if it makes much of a difference, but it seems to give a little more visibility to a small patterned offfering. Picked up quite a few fish throughout the afternoon and most fish were in the faster moving water, not the usual pocket water. Largest fish went 19" with most being 12"-15". Great way to spend an afternoon.
No indicator used.....just watching the last couple inches of the flyline for any movement. I'm using 7X tippet with the #24 RS2 and also applying floatant material to the last 8" of flyline to get it to float. Most of the water I fished, highsticking seemed to be the way to go...fast water/riffles.
No weight used.....the fly is riding just beneath the surface. I'm seeing a lot of fish rising to emergers throughout the day (the evening hatch is great), so, the fly is riding just below the surface due to the weight of the hook and small tippet.
I also caught a few today but on a #18 micro mayfly. I coudn't get them to bite after aboout 10 though. I should try the RS2. Where did you get the fly from?
I tie up my own RS2's, pretty easy pattern and easy to customize. I would think any good Fly Shop would carry them. Glad you got into a few with the Micro Mayfly.
I gotta tell ya, the RS2 is my favorite may emerger. I tie tons of variations of that sucker. Little baby black ones pass as midges at putah also. I think I use a 3761 for those. I was out on Fri and there were rusty spinners everywhere. Big ones too like 16's which I thought was weird. Some were rusty and some sulphur colored. There were caddis laying eggs and diving around also.
You're right. The RS2 been my go-to fly on a lot of rivers and creeks in NorCal. I especially like it on the Upper Sac when at certain times of the year it can be a tough fishery. On Friday, I too noticed quite a few hatches of Rusty Spinners and Caddis laying eggs, but couldn't get any takers on Drys.
Matt thanks For the Rs2 info. I wish I had one yesterday I saw the same thing going on as Birddog. Got lucky for a few on a stimulater but that was it. Also I fished the worst part of the day 10:00am to 2:30pm but that was all I could get. Saw three fish harvesters on the bank pulling them in. Thanks again hope to meet a few of you on the creek. Also Stan it was nice to meet you and those red ants.

Hey Birdog what hook do you tie those small rs2's on? I have played around with the pattern but I'll be honest I have not had too much success. What materials are you sing for the emergent wing and tails? chuck

For those of you who are interested Rim's new site is up and working.

Check out his version of what looks to me like an over-sized midge called the Plebby. Sounds like this is the fly that he has tied above the RS2 when he fishes. I love the way he uses the tag end of his thread as the tail.
Matt nailed it by listing the materials and hook brand from Rim's website. I alter the pattern a bit with a Turkey Biot (dyed green) for a segmented body. It's a little tough to get a wing biot on a small hook (I tie them in sizes #20 down to #26 hooks). Fish seem to like them....that's all that matters. I like to vary the pattern with different materials, but Rim's website is a good place to start.
