Got to Douglas City at 9am. on thursday. Fished a little there with no luck.Not knowing anything about where to fish I journeyed on towards Weaverville and than Junction City found some cool water there saw some steelies but still couldnt get one. Moved from place to place checking stuff out exploring a little. Finally turned down a dirt road and found a sweet little run. Ended up catching 2 out of 4 hooked in this hole in the evening. Fished friday morning at a different spot for one nice grab on the swing. Went back to the other run where I caught fish before but only hooked one but damn it fought like a beast. way cool I love steelhead so much. I'm really used to swinging buggers and stuff for steelies. But I got all my action on a copper john under an indicator. Talk about an indicator going under when a steelhead hits it. In fact it seems everyone is hooked on indicator fishin up there. I kind of see why. Anyway thanks for the advice from everyone. Now who wants to go?

i am thinkin trinity trip soon, maybe about a month, i have thursdays and fridays off, so i would leave weds night and crash that night then fish all say thursday and friday. hey matt r did you in a hotel, a tent, or your bed of your truck

Thanks, definitely a fun trip. Brian I slept in the back of the truck right on the river. Had no idea where I was gonna stay until I saw the rigs with cab over campers parked on the gravel bars next to their favorite fishing holes. I guess it's all good to camp wherever. There's motels in the towns around there and campgrounds scattered around as well. 220 miles from my house in Vacaville to my new favorite fishing hole. Brian you could make it up to Douglas City in an easy 3 1/2 hrs probably less the way you drive

Good job up there Matt, those fish look awesome!!! I want to catch a steelhead BAD!! What size&style copper john were you slingin? I might just have to get time off work and make a Trinity trip with Brian. Get the explorer back in action!! chuck

So when we gonna get some people together for a trinity trip, I wanted to so bad last year but there was to much snow in the forecast. I am defenitly down. Matt those are awesome fish ! I cant tell if theres an adipose fin ? They wild or hatchery, Either way, You did great ! What weight rod were you using ? Man I can only imagine how that indicator must have went down. These steelies ain't gonnabe in for long so better get up there and get em while the gettin is good !

Pretty big copper johns, I was using a size 8 daiichi hook weird black hook.
River was pretty easy to wade. The hills are really steep and it can get pretty brushy in areas.
Capt. Let's get it together and go. It's really busy with the nice weather up there. I hear it gets less crowded when it gets colder. I'm down either way. You could use anything from a 6 weight on up. Those were on an 8 wt. and they were hatchery fish. And that's what I love about hatchery's they give us these beautiful fish to catch.
James good to hear from you. I might be able to go although I havent been home for 6 straight weekends. I know I got more than a few honey doooo's. How far up did you fish?
Matt, Ifished the Stiener flat area, the river is fairly narrow and I was swinging a brindle bug and a silver hilton. There were a lot of nice runs that I didnt get to fish. I plan to leave early Fri morning.
Fished the Trinity with a friend last Thursday and Friday...same days as Matt. Had never fished for steehead before so it was a new experience, and damn I am hooked now. The friend I was with is an unbelievabley good fly fisherman...one of the best...so he caught way more fish than I did...often drifting where I had just been skunked. But it was cool to watch him do his thing...and I did catch my very first steelhead...29 inch wild buck. Way cool. Couldn't tell you exactly where we fished since it was the first time I had been there. Copper johns seemed to work pretty well. I am headed back up there next weekend for a float out of Lewiston. I am hoping the weather holds.
i thought I would pass on some info I read today about the trinity. This report i read said #14 and #12 poxy back hares ear are working well, and fishing is good around douglass city. Hope this helps.
Captian, the fishing is good around Douglas City.There is a store-gas station where the river crosses 299. They have a great selection of flys and are very knowledgeable about the conditions. Go get em.
Very cool pics Matt, sounds liek you had fun too. Mykiss and I were in Douglas City on Monday 11/05. We had some tips on where to fish near that stretch of the river. I hooked up with the first fish of the day at 9am and landed it on an indicator setup with egg pattern above a #6 copper john and Mykiss hooked up and landed 2 around 2pm. The fish I caught was hatchery and about 23 inches and Mykiss landed 1 hatchery and 1 native about 26 inches. We had a BLAST, it was my first time fishing for Steelhead. Check out these pics.
Sweet, nothin like fighting steel. I just got back from there again last week. caught a handful of steelies in this range and a small silver which was cool.
