I snuck out after lab today for some evening fishing. I got on the water a little after 5:00. There weren't too many people out there which was nice, so I was able to fish a couple of holes that I haven't fished in a while. I can't believe how low the water is. I could barely get a drift in water that I couldn't get deep enough a few months ago. I managed to get a couple of fish on a #20 JT Special, and quite a few on a #16 tan Web Wing Caddis. I didn't have any floatant (I lost it a few months ago on the Feather and haven't replaced it yet). I started out fishing it as a dry/dropper set up, but the dry wouldn't float anymore after the first fish. So, along comes my recent fettish with "drowning" bugs. I started swinging it across the current (it was too hard to see anyway), and the fish were slamming it! The Web Wing Caddis is toast, but it was way worth it. Has anyone else tried tying with web wing material? It's a fish catching material, but it seems to fall apart a lot quicker than it should. Any suggestions?

I have read if you burn the wings to shape using a pre-made or home made wing burner instead of cutting them they come out a lot tougher because the edges singe and seal up. I have never worked with the stuff myself but I have read a few magazine articles about tying with it and most of them recommend this method. I am still trying to figure out how to make my own wing burners. chuck

try using hair flaty thingy women use on their hair, i dont know what it is called, but bet you could get a real small one, how small will it have to be. but that is just an option. just not knowing how small it needs to be is the problem

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
yeah it would have to bee pretty darn small ! Plus that wouldn't really work anyway cuz a wing burner is not what it sounds like. It is actually just a small folded piece of metal cut out in the shape of whatever insect wing you are imitating. You hold the web wing inside the cut out like tweezers and then burn the edges off with a lighter. The part held inside the metal doesn't burn so you end up with a perfectly shaped wing when you are done. I just don't know how to make such tiny metal cut outs. chuck

Since you guys brought it up I'll share mine. I tie a tan fox pupae with a tent style raffia(swiss straw) wing. JT I think you say it the time we fished. It's pretty effective. Lay a little glue on the wing to hold it together. You can also throw a bead head for sinkage.
