I didn't hit up the AR this week, but I have in the past couple of weeks. Really slow and the slowest for Salmon in years. I bet it will pick up, but after Nov. 1st.

Try above the watt ave. bridge. good little section with 1/2 pounders in it.
Apparently this is a very good year on the A for 1/2 pounders. I've only been out for a 1/2 a day a few weeks ago and only got 2 hits. Not enough action for me to go back. But others who put in their time are doing farely well.

LilWhippersnapper,
The American River, at least the part they're talking about, isn't that much further.  I live in Dixon (pretty much on the way to both).  It takes about 20 minutes to get to Putah and around 30 minutes to get to the American (depending on traffic).

I do not know if this is true but i have heard something about why the salmon may show late this year. And its all politics. Last year the hatchery's killed off 10's of thousands of early arrival salmon, Why you ask ? So that the next years run will contain more late arrival salmon, This way the salmon arrive when water demands are lower. Basically they consider having to allow higher flows for the salmon a waste of water. They hope we get rain and they will not have to discharge more water from the resavoirs. The more i research californis water managment policies the more disgusted i get, This stuff will blow your mind. What mother nature has been doing for millions of years is gonna be completey ruined in less then 100 years.

well went fishing from 7-about 9 the flow was moving pretty good, and didnt have any luck. went back out at 11 with first cast bam, 12 inch rainbow, fought pretty well too. oh ya caught it on a elk hair caddis, fished with that for about 1hr or so, nothing else. then switch to a dark lord and a caddis pupae dropper, missed about 3-5 hits, meaning it was on then off within a second but on long enough to know it was a fish, i actually had 3 on, long enought to see them, all 3 where in the 16-18 inch range. saw a lot more, some big ones, just wadding and all of them i spooked. this river seems to ne very fishable in the late after noon you can wade around a lot more due to them lowering the flow a lil bit. ill be doing it again. but this time ill will try different spots. as far as watt ave goes. a lot of like flat rock with big runs washed out of them. almost like lava rock that came up then cooled by the water, but the water still pushin runs through it. well thats it nothing to exciting, but what a great day for fishing yesterday cant complain to much at all.

Were you upstream of the Watt Ave bridge Brian?  That area has a lot of clay banks, which may be the flat rock you saw.  That area is notorious for eating flies, as they get caught in the clay.  Below the bridge the river bottom is the usual rock and gravel.

Dosen't sound like a bad day Brian, We'll have to hit it up sometime soon. I think it closes below Hazel ave bridge at the end of oct. Dosen't it reopen Jan. 1st. How would you compare it to the lower yuba ? Bigger water or smaller ? Did you need to use any shot ? Is it pretty wadable ?

well the only part that closes is from hazel bridge down to the guide wire that goes across the river, and thats it, below that is good fishing, it does eat up a few flies, you really have to be on your length from indicator to bottom fly, thank god i was in a few spots where i could wade out and get them. ya those clay banks suck. hard as a rock with some really really deep runs in them. but quite a few fish. as far as wadable, there is a good amount that is. but also a lot that isnt. the few spots that i know were to fish are wadeable. and its about the same size as the yuba, maybe just a lil bit wider. but same flow, but as far as under water structure completely different. but ya when ever you wanna go let me know. ill try to get out there again. and try a few different spots and see what happens

hey sounds like you did okay there brian! I tried it out about a month ago around the Watt area and didn't even get a bite. In fact I was almost swept away wading too deep like an idiot!!! We should go out there some time and try for some steelies. That river is DEFINITELY big enough for a couple people! One thing that might interest you is that Al from American Fly told me an egg pattern is always a good bet no matter if the salmon are there or not because the trout and steelhead instinctively eat it. Go ask him and he's got pics to prove it, fat "1/2 pounders" in the middle of august all caught on egg beads. Anyways I want to catch a steelhead and we need to do another trip so lets go....
