Was there in the afternoon for a skunk near the bridge. It possibly could be just on me, the beginner cause i saw lots of fish and other fishermen catching. I tried both nymphs and dries and only had the fish following the dry fly - a moth-looking small fly.
anyways it was good to be out, its nice weather, nice to practice my delivery, nice to observe the anglers catch fish and learn about the terrain. I saw a couple of huge crayfish too.
Interestingly enough, when I was in Truckee a couple months ago I stopped at a small fly shop in town. I was asking them what folks were using on Truckee to catch fish, since I have not fished the Truckee in years. The guy came out with this crawdad pattern, I would say a size 6 or 8 and and it looked alot like a small crawdad, anyway I bought a few of them. I have not tried them on Putah yet, because I was having luck with other patterns.
Anyway, has anyone tried a crawdad pattern on Putah? I will try and take a picture of this fly and post it here...
KHB, Was it a Dead-Drift Crawdad? That fly is pretty popular on the Truckee. I was up there with dtp916 a couple of months ago and watched him catch a nice rainbow on that pattern .

not sure if we were at the same Creek. Got there early sat morning, not a strike or sighting. By noon, 4-5 other guys and myself were headed to our cars. Went to the bridge did not see any signs of activity either. 8 people crammed together under the bridge. Had to scare the hell out of the fish!
I figured the fish had to be big if it hit that fly. I was thinking it might have been the same fish that was holding in front of the big rock the trip before. I thought it might have been picture worthy.

I was there after 1pm out in the middle. green jacket, green hat, and gold colored rod. I don't think I spooked the fish until I waded on the camp side for a bit then realized my error.
I was under the bridge and around the bend all day. The fishing was slow , but still got around 8-9 fish on nymphs, all natives. Late in the evening there was a small BWO hatch and got two on drys. They were the lightest bites i have ever seen. I cut my indicator down to where it was just on the surface. And lifting the rod a little during the drift and causing the fly to rise and fall helped.
Bonefish, Talkin about sutle bites, saturday i was using a #20 griffiths gnat as an indicator and it would just ever so gently go under. One fish actually was caught on the gnat. Hard on the eyeballs.
I was gonna say that I caught more than you did, but, if I remember right, we both got dogged once it warmed up. And our fish were about the same size. Actually, you didn't see my fish, so it was bigger!

You're not the only one. The huge rainbows on Putah are good at straightening hooks. I've had a few TMC 2487 #22-24 hooks straightened by Putah pigs. Of course I was using 6X tippet. I guess when the wire on your hook is smaller than your tippet, you run into problems. What are you gonna do?

In my opinion, the 2488 increases hookups due to the wider hook gape, but at the same time it increases LDRs. I started using 2487s which has a little smaller hook gape but increases the chance of keeping the fish on the hook. They don't make 2487H, though. Another problem is that they don't make 2488H in a #24. That would take away my secret weapon. It's all a big balancing act.

i prefer the a10s the f15s and f22s, but you do have the b52s with the wider span, the f117 very stealthy, f111 just bad ass. hahaha
