Was thinking of getting on the Putah at 7:00 am Sat morning. How does the sunrise activity compare to dusk on the Putah? I drive up from San Fran and can get there any time on the weekend. Also, since I am new to the Putah Creek, what good fly shop is there for any last minute supplies, Putah bugs etc...?
i've been trying my luck at putah several times so far. 3 weeks ago i hit it up early in the morning when the flow was still high. the bait people were scoring on the planters.
all i can say is that it is difficult to wade in unfamiliar waters in the dark/shade of the early morning. but since the flows are lower now, it should be safer.
its slow, and as jl put it and i have confirmed it bigger flies in the morning work very well but still very slow.

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
It may be a little bit out of you're way but Sweeny's in Napa is a great little fly shop if you're coming from the bay area, they also carry alot of hunting and outdoor gear.
If you find yourself in a pinch sometimes the guy at the RV store has leaders and a little bit of tippet. I was so stoked to find this out one day when I busted my only leader.
The little store at the bridge sells some flies...And if you're going through Winters, there's the Berryessa sporting goods and mini mart, they sell flies and all the fly fisherman's needs.
