WHOS THE BOSS??

do you remember that show,

ya well thats what happened to me on the 12th, putah showed me whos the boss! what a day. so me and eric started at 5, work up to the old damn, and we both caught a few lost a few. then moved to the bridge area, where at that time it started to rain hard, meet flygirl,

nice meeting you flygirl, and as far as "Novelty" i would have to say yes, and your cookies are HELLA good, thank you.

as meet up with matt r, guess he was killin um earlier that day,

well fished my spot that i caught the pig in a week ago, and couldnt even get a bit, eric hooked into a nice fish between 16-18 but lost it, dont know what he did, by the time i looked up i just say fish then the fish went bye bye, i do know this the fish were there, they was eating something just nothing that i or anyone threw at them, matt r missed a few, and flygirl as well missed a few, and one nice one, but just couldnt get them to stick. oh well back to the drawing board.

oh ya to make the day even worse. lost my nymph fly box, about 60 bucks or so worth of flys somewhere out there. fell out of my bib, didnt have it closed, and now my putah flies are all gone, freaking crap, so until i can get my stock back up wont be hittin putah anytime soon.

well thats all folks.

one thing i forgot to add, i was roll cast pretty damn well yesterday, and what do yo know my top peice of my 2pc rod went flying off, reeled it back in went to put it back on my bottom half, and well broke about 1/2" on the bottom peice off. man i just cant win for nothing can i.

well atleast i got to eat some bomb ass cookies that day. which was really funny, i woke up craving for oatmeal and i couldnt find it for anything, and said oh well, around 11ish met up with flygirl, and what do you know she has some homemade oatmeal cookies, that was the highlight of the day right now. thanks again flygirl.

Another broken rod ! Man you got some bad luck. maybe someone that reads this board will find your box and return it to you, In the future you may wanna right your name and phone number on your flybox. I usually have a skunk after a good trip on putah, seems everyday is different sometimes. I see the flows have takin a huge drop in a short time, i don't think thats gonna make for very good fishing for me tommorrow.

ya the rod thing was my fault, i was flickin the crap out of it to get across the stream, it was gettin there, so cant complain, should have checked out the section more than just that one time that it came off. oh well

and yes if someone does find that black case, please let me know, there are about 4 flies that were just thrown in there and they still have some tippet material still attached to them, all similar flies are placed together. has 2 red san juans, 2 cdc emergers, a good amount of prince nymphs sizes 20,18 and 14, have a few pheastant tails, a lot of jts midge patterns, i cant just about name very fly and size in that box, so if anyone finds it let me know.

ill also post it as a new thread as well

Brian - i lost many many fly boxes, at least 3 or 4 on various trips until I did a couple things:

1.)  Bought some stretchy cord - about the width of a shoe lace.  I think it might have been called shock-cord or something.  Got it at a hardware store.
2.)  Bought fly boxes that have a little hole in the corner.
3.)  Fed the stretchy cord through the hole and tied those bad boys to my chest pack.

Now, when I spaz out and my box goes flying (I have two that are tied down), they just dangle harmlessly... maybe a fly pops out, but the rest of the inventory an the box itself swings harmlessly from it suspension cable.

I highly recommend this.

As far as flows dropping, they will get to be 1/3 what they are now, so get used to skinny flows, wyatt.  You have to find some new spots now.

The flows took a major dive today.  On Wednesday they were around 200 cfs.  They were below 100 cfs when I was there today, and tonight they're around 50 cfs.  That's gonna kill the fishing.  It takes the fish a couple of days to get used to the new flows.  We see these flows every year, though.  I miss the high water already.

I'm with JL on the flybox advice.  I dropped a box in the Silver Fork a few years ago, and luckily my friends son grabbed it as it floated by a rock downstream.  I now use retractors on all three boxes I carry.  I often forget to put them back in the vest until I notice them dangling on the retractor.  Definitely worth the few dollars to save your flies.

ya now you guys tell me, what ever, just playin, but ya i was thinking even if i didnt get a retractor atleast some bungy cord or something along those lines, and punch to holes in the case or go and buy a loop bolt with a nut at homedepot or something and attach that to your box then tie to that. but i do know this, i learned a very expensice mistake.

i once found a fly box filled with some really nice fly's, it was defenitly someone goto box, had the guys name and phone number wrighten on the outside, If that wasnt there i would have left it, but i figured, cool i call and return it. phone number was no longer in service, Oh well, ended up with several hundred dollars worth of stuff, It was an entire chest pack with all the goody's, I still feel bad for the guy but hey I tried, I didnt even open it till after I tryed to get a hold of em. Point is I think that putting your name and a phone # on your fly boxs is a good idea, hopefully a fellow flyfisherman will find it and return it, cause we all know how it would feel if it happened to you. oh and it wasnt at putah or anywere near putah so dont claim it now biggrin

Who's the boss ? Not me, Man I fished hard today, arrived at the dirt parking lot across from the camp ground at 7 a.m. Fished up and down the close bank in the deeper slower water and couldn't buy a bite. There were some big ass fish rising pretty consistantly all day, sometimes would tapper off but then would start again. Big splashy rises all day long. I fished a tan micromayfly, caddis pupah, a few different red midges, a P.t, and a kinda neon green colored  midge, all pretty small patterns around size 18 and 20. Finally hooked and landed 2 10 inch sorry ass planters at the end of the day, Wich was around 4 p.m. i figured the fishing would be kinda slow when i saw the flows when i got up this morning, Big drop to I think it was 53, I could tell the flows had even slowed down more in the afternoon, could't even get a good drift anymore, and yeah they droppped to like 40 i think. Finished up the day with a few different dry's but no luck on em, Fish were rising but i didnt see much insect's in the air but there were alot of spinners drifting around along the banks. Anyway's it was a really nice day on the creek, Other then the fact that there were tons of people out there today, The one spot I been waiting to fish all summer and i get there and there two guys there, DAMN. I also noticed that all the access area's have been paved over and changed, Good to see some tax dollars put to some good use.

When Putah gets this low don't bother with an indicator. Either high-stick or drop a nymph off a dry. Indicators are over rated anyway. Last few times out I told myself no indicator! I feel like I got better dead drifts and caught more fish. It really makes you concentrate too because any little movement to your line and you set.

I just attended a presentation by Ralph Cutter (I'll assume you know who he is) and he says not matter what you do with an indicator on your line, even perfect mends, that indicator is causing drag.

I'll still use an indicator on big water like the Yuba or Lower Sac but leave it home on the smalll stuff.

hey when it comes to use a fly, do you use the dry as an indicator then the normal 2 fly set up, or what. i know next time i go i am gonna switch it up, just dont know how yet.

Yes, the dry becomes your indicator but you may also get a fish to rise to it. If your drop 2 nymphs off a dry 2 things will happen, the dry will probably be pulled under and you'll get the flies tangled very easily. Here is a quote from Ralphs site about drag and indicators:

Keep your indicator floating drag free on the surface. If you're fishing in 12 inches of water, yes this is true. In water knee deep and beyond, you're blowing the presentation by having the indicator drift with the film. Because of friction exerted by the substrate, water just above the streambed is moving pretty slowly. In fact, for the first couple of millimeters (called the boundary layer), the water isn't moving much at all. Even in tumultuous water, nymphs drifting along the streambed are traveling at a modest speed.

If your indicator is drifting drag free on the surface, rest assured your nymph is being ripped along the bottom at a most unnatural rate. While it's true many trout are some how fooled by this presentation, many others aren't. Keep your rod upstream of the indicator and every second or so, pull back just enough to create a "V" wake on the upstream side of the indicator. This will slow down the nymph. After a second of holding the indicator back, give it a bit of slack. This will allow the nymph to fall back to the bottom. (If you don't hang up your split shot, you're not using enough). This method will keep the nymph in the feeding zone, will keep it drifting at a natural rate, will give it enticing action as you mini-mooch it and will instantly increase your success.

If you use just the dry fly......that's the method that's called dry fly fishing:)

Use something like a parachute adams, parachute bwo or e/c caddis as the dry and drop a micro mayfly, wd-40, RS2 or midge larve off it for the nymph....and don't forget about the san juan worm!

I noticed when I use a dry fly, it will sink if there is any drag against its drift. I put a lot of floatant on it, but it still sinks when there is a tiny bit of drag... Is this supposed to happen?

chuck and i used this method up at carson and it work really well, dont remember if we used 2 flies or one, but again it worked well, i guess one good thing about this is you have the dry fly and a wet fly so dont have to have a stupid long leader like i normally use when i am on putah. but ya the dry fly and one fly nymph worked very well up on the carson and flows there were at 50cfs and we was hookin up all day

Hey Guys,
Too bad to hear about that box Brian. I had the same thing happen to me on my b-day two weeks ago when I was out on the Truckee. I used it as an excuse to buy myself a boatload of new flies for a self birthday present. ha! Amazingly enough I had my number on the box and someone called me yesterday and left a message on my voice mail saying they found it floating down the river! Just when I thought my fishing luck was going down the tubes! Always write that number on the box!! Regarding the dry/dropper rig it is possible to fish with 2 nymphs but they either have to be smaller nymphs or you have to use a big attractor for your dry. I have had success with one and two flies or also using a big dry and a nymph with a split shot to get it down in shallow, fast water. I have not tried any dry/dropper work on putah though I hope to this season.  Also to keep the fly on top in tricky/fast currents it is necessary to be watching the drag all the time.  Try to keep all of your line and even your leader off the water if possible so that there is nothing to drag the fly down in the current.   This method is almost like high sticking and it can produce well.
Chuck

hey chuck whats new. so i am guessing what we did up on the carson is what everyone is talkin about now. which if memory serves me right we did pretty good on, and i think i do have a few of those types of flies in one of my other boxes. so maybe ill be on putah sooner than later, but i am still hoping for my steelie, bow, and brown exploration on friday. depends on where we go.

I agree with ya packrat, I do not like using an indicator at all. High stickin is by far my most productive way to fish.

the south fork american thats the one past placer is good but sizes will be small. possible 20 fish days, yuba will be hard to fish, the feather is also good right now.

I never would have thought to write my number on my fly box, that's a great idea, that's going to be done before the next time I get out.

As for indicator vs no indicator, I almost always tight line but after last Saturday I feel a lot better about using an indicator.  It's like anything else, there are no black and white answers, it's best to have different techniques for different conditions and to use whatever is appropriate for the situation.  I think the indicator allows you to better track your fly through areas that would otherwise have been difficult to drift properly with a tight line, or maybe even impossible to do so.  On the other hand, if I'm dropping down 8-10 feet into a hole with a small cannon ball for weight there's absolutely no point in using an indicator. Based on some articles I've read it seems the biggest challenge fishing nymphs is with undetected takes and indicators do a real good job helping with that in a broad range of scenarios.

BTW Brian, I hope your box turns up.  I lost one a long time ago, now decades later I'm back into fly fishing and I still remember the pain of losing a wheatley stuffed with a bunch of flies I couldn't afford to lose in a box I couldn't afford to buy.  These days there are no more wheatleys (there are much cheaper designs that are better designed) and the first thing I do after pulling out a fly is to put the box back in the pocket and zip it up before I do anything else. Experience says I'm too much of a knucklehead trust myself otherwise.

I use indicators quite a bit when fishing.  The indicator will allow you to get longer drifts and allow you to drift through the sections on the other side of the creek.  I have a few different sizes.  Which one I use depends on the current speed and the amount of weight that I'm using.  I will often change while fishing if I'm fishing a slower (or faster) section of the creek.  I have experimented and found the right size of indicator that will support certain amounts of weight, enabling me to detect subtle strikes.  If I'm fishing close, I'll often take off the indicator or, if I'm feeling lazy, keep the indicator out of the water.
