question about tippet

well i use my normal 3x to first fly 5x to second fly, i dont keep my tippet in the car or near heat or anything like that, was doing some tying last night, and noticed that i keep on breakin my 5x tippet everytime i tightened a tie on my fly, so then just pulled a peice off the spool pulled and snap, i was like ok maybe i did leave it in the sun or something, went and got a new spool of 5x got to the car, pulled a peice off, gave it a tugg, and snap, again broke in my bare hands, now is it me or am i trippin, 5x is 5lb test, should i be able to break is that easily. i dont remember it being like that before. but i have been hittin the weights lately, hahaha, guess i dont know my own strenght, any pointers or ideas,

should i step up to 4x, or what, i have always used 3x to first fly and 5x to second with no problems or breakoffs before. so whats my issue all of a sudden.

and i sure know a new spool aint gonna have any problems right. so is 5x really easy to break with my bare hands

The "X" is not a breaking strength but a diameter rating.  The breaking strength of the tippet I use is as follows: 3X 8.8 lbs, 4X 6.6 lbs, 5X 4.4 lbs, 6X 3.3 lbs.  You should be able to break 5X in your hands but probably not as easy as you are breaking it.  What brand do you use?

just went to american fly fishing were i bought it, ya i am trippin, he pulled slowly and it didnt break then i pulled slowly didnt break, but then i did what i did earlier and well it broke, i have rio i think, i might upgrade to maxium here in a few weeks, gonna do a wild trout and steelie run in either the feather or the yuba, havent decided yet, but allen at american fly should me some spots and recent pics, and it is hot right now, and the spots that i will be fishing are now after the 15 of limits to salmon snaggers, and also no one ever fishes them, its gonna be some long walks but when i am fishin in areas no one ever fishes and 4-6 lb average steelies up to 8 and 2-4 lb trout average, and some above 6 are in the area then i think it will be a blast,

so eric you ready for this trip in 2-3 weeks

Heres something you may find interesting Brian, Last week at the upper sac. I was tying up a rig with my normal 5x rio tippet material and I noticed the peice of tippet I pulled of the spool was all chaffed. I figured it was just that peice, The whole damn spool was like that. I had to go and buy a new spool. I always use rio leaders and tippet and never have seen this before. Overall 5x is pretty strong. Hmmmm a steelhead trip ? Interested in splitting some gas or anyother costs ? I just may be available, The yuba is ok, never tried the feather, And I'v never caught a steelhead, Last year I did see some big ones in the yuba. I've seen some steelhead caught and those are some real bad boys, Have a good drag on your reel they'll smoke you dude. I have a bunch of steelheads fl'y that have never been used. You may wanna try egg sucking leeches, and hiltons, egg patterns will also work, I have some large egg clusters that i'd like to try. The river should also have quit a few salmon in them, Might get lucky and hook one of em, of course no salmon can be kept on the yuba, not sure about the feather.

hey shawn, you are more than welcome to come along. as far as the feather cant keep any salmon after the 15th of oct. gonna give the fish about 2 weeks before we hit them up. we will be fishing the low flow near hwy 70 on the feather. up near the hatchery, and we can also hit up my 2nd home away from home, yuba city marysville area, for steelies and trout as well. that spot on the yuba is about 4 miles out on hwy 20 before you hit loma rica rd, and pretty much its a stripe of about 5-6 miles of 99% unfished water. just waiting to get hammered, i know me and eric are gonna hit it up, and you are more than welcome to come too. i live in sac, and i know eric is gonna crash the night at my house. i have 2 couches and you are more than welcome to do the same. he is about 2 hrs away as you are hr and a half, and either spot we fish either the feather or the yuba is about 1hr and a half away. so pm me and let me know what you would like to do, and we can go from there. i am hoping to have my 5wt st croix back at that time as well. so i can have some fun with my 5wt if i want to, but you know my redington 6wt will either be in my hand on on my side. well hit me up and let me know.
