Man, what a Tuesday I had on the creek. Normally I wait until late October and sight fish the bigguns who are milling around on the low flows. You gotta present to these guys just right or they just brush you off.
I took some solid advice and went south of #5 and followed the river down to two sections of river I will call "Heavens Riffle One and Two".
Had a 40 fish day if that, maybe more, almost every cast produced nice 8-10 inch shakers who fought like the devil was behind them. These small stockers have some real fight in them. NOTHING like the stockers on the East Sierra who are all about dead...they just do not know it yet. I had a buddy bring in a 3lb 'bow one year out there that came to hand in 2 minutes and fought like a tree stump.
I hit the river at 8.00 am, went for lunch at 1.00 and was back on for the late afternoon bite. Saw a few BWO's hatch off and more than a handful of juicy fat grey Mayflies with a few takes at the surface.
No bigguns yesterday, maybe one, but I never really saw the beast. To make things fair I switched off from 5x once I became aware of the average size of the shakers then I had to "work" them or lose them with the current. That's about when something a bit larger grabbed my fly...
Flies used yesterday were standard poxy back #16-18 hares ears, PT's of the same size, a green pupah and tan pupah, and this little #20 red midge with a white cap I found that really turned sleeping late day fish into hungry little chompers.
Smaller flies were the call of the day, will be back next week to go after the bigguns. On a side note The "on stream grazing" was nice, found a fully loaded fig tree and enjoyed some sweet grapes along the way. Looks like I missed almost all the blackberries this year.
Anyone know how the calm sections below #5 work out on float tube?
nice post shark diver, cant wait until i hit the river again on friday, as far as gettin grub around in the area, whats the best and closest place, subway in winters or is there a place thats closer. i might just bring lunch but who knows
again nice post, and way to stick it to um, any advise for morning time bit, i know you got there at 8am, ill be there about an hour before that

By 12.00 it's pretty much a hard slog for the fish so I hightail it to Winters for a Subway sandwhich and an iced latte in a bottle (recharge fuel). I might suggest that you try #5 and head south (I never said that) and I also never said "try a #18 hares ear with a sparkle back".
You most certainly did not hear me say "if you have hit flat water you have gone to far south, turn back". You can also never quote me saying "bring a net 'cause you'll need it".
Good hunting...oh, and I never said that "it picks back up for a nice 5-7pm late bite on almost anything small".
