This weekend is my annual three day float trip on the deschutes, and we are saving a day to fish the upper sac on the return trip. I thought about fishing around pollard flats, but I have never fished on the sac, lower or upper. Can anyone help directe me in a direction that would allow two people to fish for a couple hours. Like I said I'm not famillar with the river, and am just looking for some direction. Can I count on October caddis?
Dude, I'm heading up to the upper sac. very early wendsday morning. I have only fished it once, But I'll start at mossbrae falls, Then cantara loop area, Thats a really good spot, Then I hope to fish the lower part of the river closer to lake shasta, Rumor has it theres some real big browns starting to run up into the river to spawn. As far as october caddis, I'm hoping that its goin off , I've heard about em but have yet to see it happen. Got my dry box fully stocked with stimulators and elk hairs of all sizes and colors, Lots of caddis pupahs, and rockworms to, prince nymphs and darklords sizes 14 to about 20 also work well in the upper sac. I'll also be fishing the McCloud one day, That will be a first for me. 5 days of fly fishin heaven
Hey captian, what is a darklord? What does it imitate? How long are you going to fish the upper sac? If you think your going to be there on monday let me know, and maybe we can hook up. I will have someone with me but I don't htink they would have a problem with that. Is the cantara loop near dunsmir? I really need to find a map of the river, do you have any reccomendations.
I'll be getting there tommorow morning and leaving sunday afternoon. Cantara loop is north of dunsmuir, Not to far below lake siskyou. Defenitly need a map. A darklord is an all black nymph with laid back yellow wings, reminds me alot of a prince nymph but dark. Not sure what it imitates but its a well know fly, I'm sure you can find some images online. A stop at ted fayes fly shop is a must, The guys in there are really great, Give em some business, then ask for some advice. Hope you have a good trip.
The Cronicle ran a great story on fly fishing the Sac on 09-27-07. That same day they also ran a story on stream restoration prject for Alameda Creek in Alameda county to bring back Rainbows and Steelhead....
If you feel like making a stop just before Redding stop at the Redding fly shop. It is the Churn creek exit turn right at the light and then a quick left at the gas station then less than a mile on the left side. They will fix you up. They have all kinds of free maps for the upper sac and all the fishing areas up there. And anything else you might need. And they are nice people to.

I Have been fishing the upper sac for a few years with a friend who has taught me alot. We high stick most of the time. Pollard flat is one of my favorite places. Just like Putah, learning where the fish are is a big part. The access is great because of the railroad land right along hwy 5 but many people pass it by or don't stay because they have little luck. It is all about getting down and down fast. We fish the lower river most of the time, below dunsmuir. The dry fly action is in the upper section in the evenings............when it is on, this river is not known for lots of dry fly fishing. We nymph with birds nest, prince nymphs, hares ear, dark lords(not available from Bob at Ted Fay's but available at the Dunsmuir fly shop nearby) big rubber leg stones, golden stones, and my best fly is called a half back. This is a small #18, black thread head, yellow thorax crawling out of a pheasant tail/copper wire body. I keep it on all the time and change out the other fly. We use larger flys and bead heads in spring and early summer and smaller in late summer and fall. In June my friend and I met some fishermen down river in the morning who headed up river to get out of the 90 plus head in hopes of catching fish. We stayed down river and caught fish all day long during the heat. Getting deep, and deep fast............I have been in an Oct caddis hatch and been skunked, I believe the fish were taking rising caddis, not the drys. And yes the big fish from the lake move up the river in the fall. I have caught some beautiful large fish in the lower section this time of year. You all got me very excited, I hope to go up Nov 10,11,12. Ted
