I fished the creek this afternoon with Brian Clemens.  He was making me look bad when we started.  It was like I couldn't remember how to get a hit.  That was until I landed a FAT 19"er.  I got him on a drowned bwo pattern I've been working on.  I hooked two fish that were 20+".  They both broke me off.  I don't know if they went under or around a rock or something, but both of them hung me out to dry.  They both took a Fox Poopah: one tan and the other olive.  I landed a bunch of hatchery fish as well.  They mostly took micromays and the drowned bwo.  The flows were at 310 cfs, my favorite flows on the creek.

I think they dumped more than usual this last time.  They're everywhere!  There are tons of people pulling fish out, but it seems there's no end to the hatchery fish.  Just wait until the BIG fish start spawning.  They'll put a hurtin' to 'em.

hey jt, it was a blast fishing with ya, gonna have to do it soon, as far as my day, cant complain one bit, started out about 1030, within my first 3 casts caught a nice 12-13 inch native fatty, MY FIRST BY THE WAY, fished in that spot for a lil longer, a few hits but kept on missing them, i had a lot of that the whole day, so moved upstream from that spot, and then just started hammering them, caught 7 total fish 3 native one 8 inch one 10 and the other fatty, and the other 4 were planters, all caught on JT's magic flies, jt will need help on this one again, sice 22 zebra mig       and thats what i used all day, and this so far as the best day on putah ever, then at 310 here comes JT (from now on aka SUPERMAN) anyways went to his favorite spot, and with my trust jt spun flies started gettin hits and having fish one, i was having a blast, had one nice 12-13" native on fought well and got it at my feet and it said see ya and came un hooked no biggy, then a few drifts later hook to my mind a reall nice fish probably pushing 16"s nice and fat, so jt got ready with his net and between me tryin to keep pressure and reelin up to him i lost him, great fight though, after that hooked into a few planters, then all of a sudden jt washes of that skuck smell with is 19"er, so jealous, then it died down a lil then i dont know what it was, he started just hittin the big ones in the same spot i was just in, hook so pigs from what i could see, so i went to his spot he caught his 19"er and within 6 7 cast hook a freaking pig, looked almost like the first one he caught, well needless to say, my set up sucks and didnt have um on to long, did some stream line zing through the air and came off,

BUT BY FAR THE BEST DAY I HAVE HAD EVER FLY FISHING, THANK YOU SO MUCH JT, FOR EVERYTHING, THE TEACHINGS, THE FLIES AND JUST A GREAT FISHING COMPANION. I BOW DOWN TO YOUR FISHING ABILITIES.

well i will be back on the creek on thursday, hey wippersnapper, i know i said i might hit the carson, but will more than likely hit putah, and if you want to hit it with me you are more than welcome to join, i might even be able to teach you a few thing, NOT. hahaha

again JT

THANK YOU,
we will have to do it again soon

I'll probably be there Brian, but as far as the teaching thing, you can teach me all you want... You may not know the names of your flies, but you can catch em.

Hey JT, what was hatching yesterday... I saw you looking at a rock. I was the guy who caught your aquarium fish yesterday, and getting stuck in the tree.
Brian told me he would be fishing with you, so I figured that was you.

5 out of the last 6 fish I caught were wild. I had some dry fly action at sunset, they were jumping like crazy but mostly 8 inchers...I did get a chunky 13 inch wild though.
I lost my only wd40 on a putah pig. That sucked.

i go there, I go for the whole day. One of these time I'm gonna camp out at solano and fish 2 days...I heard it's only 15 bucks to camp???

Haha, Nice setup... My first setup was my dads old 1960's cortland rod and reel with the original fly line. Now I have a 5 wt yellowstone rod, which no one seems to have heard of before. I like it though.

It's not surprising that there are so many planters this year, I recently read an article about how the dfg. is planting more trout this year then ever before, May or may not be a good thing, It gets people out fishing, and spending money on fishing gear, and licenses, This means more revenue for the dfg. And this is good for all of us. I would really tlike to see more of an effort to plant fingerling's. Brian, You been using a 9 weight with a 5 weight line ? Now thats just plane weird biggrin. A 9 weight would be suitable for large salmon, steelhead and stripers. Whippersnapper, I have defenitly heard of yellowstone rods, and I'd say you have yourself a fine fly rod, With a liftime warranty. Somebody mentioned camping at lake solano, I am defenitly going to do some camping there this fall and winter, I only live about an hour from the creek but i love to camp, Maybe some of ya would like to get a little something together, Hey I bbq. some killer food.

Thanks for letting me know it's a good rod captain, and that was me who mentioned solano.

Yeah Brian, I caught quite a few twigs yesterday, but it's nice to know something loves my flies.

hey brian your going to love that rod. I had the same rod, until life happened that is, but i caught some large fish on that rod. It loads nice and can throw alot of line if you need it to. Hope it does you right. I now have a Imperial six weight that landed me my first steelhead. There may be better, more expensive gear out there, but the Imperial is great for us that are still learning the basics.

Brian,
The flies you were using were a #18 bwo nymph and a #22 black drowned midge.

LilWhippersnapper,
The bugs on the rocks were mayfly nymphs (bwo), blackfly larvae, and caddis larvae (hydropsyche).  It sounds like you have quite the drive.  How often do you fish the creek?

The name of the book is The Essence of Flycasting by Mel Krieger.  There is book and a video with the same title and by the same guy.  I recommend them both to anyone who is looking to improve their casting.

You guys mentioned the large numbers of planters in Putah lately,I just spoke with a DFG official last week about some regulation issues on the creek and during our conversation we spoke about the planters. He stated that Putah recieves more planted fish than any other moving body of water in the state! But we will hopefully in the near future begin to look into making Putah a wild trout fishery,as the state of Calif is mandated to create new wild trout waters every year, mmmmmm....very interesting!
