everyone keeps asking me about me secrets for fishing in the rain...I cant answer all the PM's so here we go everyone....its all about color and drift speed....what ever the go to flys are I match them in black. all black no gold or silver wire no flash backs.I black them all the way out ..I have them made special for me but you can use a black sharpie...I also slow down the speed of my drift.I do it buy putting a cluster in the middle of my 3 fly rig.split shot makes everything sink but the cluster slows down the drift with a little extra drag.I also use a little bigger indicator to help slow the drift as well.i dont put floatant on it I like it when it is half sunk..I do this when the surface is brocken up from the rain fall.. so make sure you got a rain coat..hands down my best days have been in the rain...I keep a log of each day on the water and the log never lies....this set up in the rain has yet to let me down..
What ever they were eating before the rain hits.Last monday I had a good day using a hogans s&m ,pt's and a fly made for me called a jw..I would use those same flys but in all black...I myself would start where I left off the last time I was on the water. If that wasnt working then I would look at my log or see whats in the grass or on the rocks....
A cluster is egg pattern made of yarn .. It looks like a group off eaggs stuck together the most common colors for putah are yellow ,pink and orange..they have a nice big hook ..I remove the barb just in case I foul hook one...
Some of my best days have been in the rain as well. I've seen the fish go nuts during a good downpour. You can get a lot closer to them when it's raining, too. Make sure you invest in a good rain jacket and waders, though. It can be miserable if you get wet.
