I've been thinking about fishing at Putah Creek tomorrow, but my ski watch tells the atmospheric pressure has dropped since last week from 1008 mb to 999 mb. It's also been noticably colder in the last couple of days and I'm wondering how much that will affect the fishing as I have a two hour drive each way. Back in February I had an incredible day of fishing and a week later, just as the presssure dropped, I was totally skunked as well as drenched by the torrential rain. I wouldn't have minded the rain if I'd caught a fish. I went partly to test a theory that the low pressure drop would stop the fishing and it seemed to do just that. I guess it reduces the insect activity as well as the trout activity. Does anyone have any predictions for tomorrow?
I would say if the weather stays cool the fishing should be good. I was on the creek Tuesday and the fish are still biting. Same old flies micro mayflies, poohpahs and midges. I have never studied pressure, but I think the fish are affected more by water flows and water temps. The BWO hatch was occuring late in the evening last week, but on Tuesday with the cooler weather the hatch was smaller and earlier. I think I met you a few years ago, when the flows were like 1000 cfs. The flows are now about 350 cfs which have been good. The fish have actually been biting most of the day. Go deep or fish riffles during the day. Hit the pools later. I am heading out to the creek in the late afternoon after I finish my job in Napa.
Atmospheric pressure affects fish with air bladders, like Large mouth bass. When there is change in pressure going from high to low , the fish actually feed more(at least with Bass). Not too sure about trout. I am going to look online , if i get better information i will share.
I agree with ya bonefish, i have found pressure changes affect bass much more so then trout. Thats just my personal experience. I think water temp. is more important to fish of any types behavoir.
