I made it out this evening on the creek.  I ended up with a little over ten fish to net, the largest being a belly-bulging 17"er.  I lost just as many fish.  One of the fish lost was a really nice fish, about 20" and SUPER FAT.  He bent the hook out.  It wasn't on a #24 hook, either.  He straightened a #16 TMC 3769.  Hot flies for the day were #16-18 micromays and a #24 drowned midge.  There was a nice BWO hatch going on today.  There were a couple of sizes coming off of the water, so I rigged a pair of micromays and started to hammer fish.  I didn't see one caddis, but there were the usual million midges lining the banks.  A major plus today was the lack of wind.  The water's been too nice.  I haven't worn waders on the creek in a couple of months, and I won't be putting them on anytime soon.

Nice JT.  Way to go wish I could been there whackin em with ya.  Definitely have to take advatage of those non windy days, it sure makes it better to mend  and get a  perfect drift.

Thatmust of been a strong fish to bend that hook.  Some of those fish are carrying alot of weight, I think when you get one of the super fat hot ones in the fast current is when the hooks are at the bending point.

I had a #24 snap off at the bend, but that's to be expected.  I couldn't believe it when the #16 hook bent out.  He was a big fish, though, and was pulling hard (as was I).  I would think the tippet would break before the hook bent out on that hook.  Oh well.  Matt, when we gonna hook up?

Nice report JT.  I caught a fish on a bug you gave me last week.  Thanks.  If I did better with poison oak I would wet wade all summer.   Took the wife out last week and wet waded.  Once I got half way in I wanted to dive in.  It was so hot that day I should have.

JL, I don't fish Sundays but maybe sometime next week.

Cole, I've been blessed so far with regards to poison oak.  I've never had any problems.  I know that change at any time.  My dad didn't used to have any problems with it, but that changed.  Now, if he stands downwind of a plant, he breaks out.

Hey Guys, I just started fly fishing this week. I had been following the sight all summer and finally had the time to take off and fish this week. My goal was to catch my first fish with a fly buy Friday and I did it this morning at #5. Netted a 8 Rainbow and then had a second fish take my fly and tippet. All I got was a nice 15 flash of white as I tried to land it.

I have a couple of questions for you guys. Are all the small barnacle looking things on the rocks cased caddis fly larvae?

Also during the hatch the other night I saw a lot of little ¼ to ½ green (bright green) flies with white wings. Are they caddis flies or midges.

Yes, the barnacle-looking things sound like cased caddis larvae.  The small flies that were hatching the other night were probably blue wing olive mayflies.  There was a nice hatch the other day.

Hey Matt:

I'm heading up today - try to get in some late afternoon fishing (labor day)... I'm hopeful that all the holiday crowds are gone by then.  If you can make it up, i'll be hoofin around access 5.

Wyatt - good meetin you the other day on the creek -you're welcome to fish with me whenever I'm up there.  If you make it out today I may see you again.

I fished sunday the 2nd at various spots around the resort. Once again i could not find a single wild fish. Very little insect activity that i noticed, just a few midges in the morning. After a few hours of drowning midges, micromay fly's and size 16 and 18 pt's I figured wht the heck may as well catch a few planters, so i went with a great fly that planters seem to luv it looks like a bumblebee, i got it at ted fays for the upper sac. but seems to work well everywhere, used this with a egg dropper. defenitly not traditional putah fly's but it still fun to catch a few fish(more like about 25) even if they are planters. One thing i did do today was find a really cool spot to fish that i had never been to before, Although putah is only a few miles long it pays to do some bushwacking sometimes, Just when you think you know every spot along there ya find something new. It was nice to wet wade today, just waiting for a poison oak break out now blankstare.gif. Surprising the crowds were not bad.
