Floating Lake Solano
Permalink

Firstly I must say, there a quite a number of very skilled and educated fly fisherman putting up some great information lately. I'm getting a good education by reading your posts.

I haven't fished Putah much and hope to do more in the future. I may get an opportunity to get out fishing in a few days. Before I venture out, is float tubing in Lake Solano an option at this time ? Is the Lake area heavily weeded ?

I know I could fish above the lake, however with you folks catching all the fish, I would think there wouldn't be much action left for me(and my Putah skill level).

Any thoughts ?

I haven't posted in a long time since I didn't really have much to contribute since I haven't fished Putah much.

With the high summer flows, Solano looks pretty clear right now.  I ran into Bono on the creek last week and he had taken his son out in a canoe and had good fishing.  They stocked the lake a couple of weeks ago, so stripping a woolly bugger could be good right now.

Thanks Phil.

Outside of Wolly Buggers, do nymphs work in the Lake area ?

I'm still debating whether I'll hit the lake or the river. Also I bet it got hot up in your area today.

I've caught fish on damselflies and midges in the lake.

I havent fished it much this summer, been working waay to much to get out alot, plus been out of town a bit. In the past though, as the weather cools (either in the fall or in the evening) I have found that olive wooly buggers with grizzly hackle do a fantastic when fished along weed beds. Otherwise, there are scuds, midges, mays and still water caddis in Solano. I have yet to try 'midging' and 'still water nymphing' by the weeds, which are full of green midges...anyone with crowley experience might do well.

I haven't nymphed much in the lake since those olive crystal flash buggers work so well.  In late evening there are usually a lot of rising fish and BWO's can be very effective or even caddis.  And yes, it has been stinking hot up here.  It was still over 90 last night at 10:00.  I wouldn't want to be wearing waders during the day right now on Putah.  Time to hit the Sierras.  Good luck.

All

Thanks for the advice.

I agree that the Sierras is a better option if you can get away, however...not this weekend for me.

Chem Doc:

Where have you been fishing in the Sierras ? When I was up there in May, the water(Deer Creek, Battle Creek, Gurnsey Creek) look like they were a September's level. How do the waters look now ?

I've only floated solano lake one time, last may when flows were still low and I was surprised at the amount of current. Best if you start at #5 and float down and have a second vehicle to drive back up, otherwise i wouldnt bother. Just my 2 cents worth.
