Fished Putah this morning.  Caught 5 fish.  Four were planters (3-12",1-10") and one was an 18 inch natural.  The 18 incher was a true pig!  It was so fat that it stomach was bulging.  I lost another fish easily as big as the 18 incher.  When I set the hook, it jumped and spit the hook.  All the fish were caught on small mayfly nymphs.  The big fish took a PT.

Nice.  How early were you on the water?  Haven't been out to Putah in a couple months, but planning on taking a buddy who doesn't flyfish much out Sat morning.  Any surface action at all?

I started early, around 7:00.  I woke up early, even for me, but I was intending to fish early to beat the mid-day heat.  There were a lot of midges early, but they didn't seem to bring up many fish.  The 18 incher was a riser, however, and I was able to get him on my first cast to him.  Even if I am using a nymph, I always cast to a rising fish.  A good percentage of the time the fish will take the nymph.  Most of the time, however, I don't see many risers and this was the case Wednesday morning.
