Planned on heading to lake alpine to float tube this past weekend for a few days but that lake is bigger then I remembered and the wind was howling, Had to change plans. Headed up hwy 4 a few more miles and stayed at a place called mosquito lakes, Its more like two large ponds, Its near ebbets pass at 8,000 foot elevation. Still was way to windy to even attempt the float tube or even to cast a flyrod. So I was forced to spend most of the time using spinners on an ultra light spinning rod, saturday had good action all day for a mix of wild, holdovers and planters, all rainbows, Landed 7, lost a few.Sunday same thing but worse, the wind was brutal, fished for several hours without a single hit. Finally early monday morning the wind quit, I only got in about 2 hours with a flyrod and my float tube, managed to land 2 wild fish and lost 2 others, on an olive wooly bugger, All the fish were about 12 inches with 2 that went close to 15 inches. Then once again the wind picked up so I headed home a day early, the wind was just to much. Its a bueatiful place defenitly worth a trip for the scenery alone. Heres a few pics of the lake.
I have been up to that area twice now and did some exploring at Mosquito Lakes and about 45 minutes east. I did not wet the line as it was family swim exploring, but Mos. Lakes looked promising. Sounds like very good fishing considering the pressure this time of year. The lake that is about 30 minutes east (forget the name) that is right on the side of the road looked to hold a lot of fish. Have you fished that lake or the 2 lakes that appear to be a short walk away? I spent a lot of time on the Stanislaus down from Dorrington. That is a good fishery. Lot's of natives on nymphs once you get a mile up or down river from the campground. Very willing planter's near the campground, both browns and rainbows. Anyway, saw your post and not a lot of people seem to go to the area. Any other thoughts on the area would be appreciated.
I think your reffereing to kinney resavoir, never tried it, I'm really not much of a still water fisherman, but i like to fish a lake or two once in awhile. The hwy. 4 corridor has many fishing oppuritinity, theres north fork moklumne, silver creek, wolf creek, east and west carson rivers. Mosquito lakes produced good, was a little fishing pressure but not to bad, just watch, most people dont know what there doing anyways, lol. Ever heard the saying 10% of fisherman catch 90% of the fish. Thanx for the info. on stanislaus at dorrington, I may camp and fish there in a few weeks. Won't be long now before the brown trout spawning starts, Stanislaus river system will be off the hook at that time ! it truly is gods country up there. Pretty much any water up in that area is a good bet. The fish are not huge do to the short growing season but its all fast action fishing for smaller trout. We are very lucky to have the sierra's in our backyard.
