08/15/07: I tried to get to Putah this morning, but there was a fire which closed highway 128 at Pleasants Valley Road. I was thinking about heading back home immediately, but I thought I would just be fighting Bay Area commute traffic. Instead, I parked my car at the Pardehsa store and walked down to the bridge. I talked with three bait anglers who hadnt caught anything. On the upstream side of the bridge, however, I was quite surprised by what I saw. About 75 to 100 yards above the bridge I spotted some rising fish. There werent great numbers of fish rising, however definitely enough to get my attention. Two other things were notable. First, several of the risers were good fish. Although I was too far away to accurately guess their size, several were definitely bigger than your average planter. The second thing I noticed was their rise form. These fish were not sipping midges or small mayflies. These fish were making "slashing" rises. It was early, about 7:30 A.M., so I dont know if they could be taking caddis, but whatever they were rising to, it had to be a substantial food item. Many of these risers showed a good portion of their body when they rose. Since my luck at the stream has improved recently, I dont think I will be going after these fish soon. However, if my luck should turn sour, I can always consider going after these fish with my float tube.
