Hi guys...I will be staying at the Tenaya Lodge...near Yosemite...for a couple of days. I want to fish while I'm there, but have never been to the area before. I think Bass Lake is nearby, but would rather fish the creeks or rivers. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Sorry to say the stanislaus or none of its forks flow through yosemite. Not sure were it is that you are staying but you may wanna look into the tulumne river above from around buck meadows to hetch hetchy resavoir and then aboove hetch hetchy, then try the headwaters of the tuolumne, there called the Lyell fork and the Dana fork, most of this area is hike in only. Then of course you have the merced river, I dont know anything abou that river. Good luck I'm sure it'll be a great time, be preppered for very clear water and low flows. Much different fishing then putah.
Fly girl, for the NZ mudsnail, you can also use a 50/50 mixture of Windex and water and then leave your boots/waders to dry in the sun, then rinse with clear water. Easier and cleaner than freezing.
As for Yosemite, will you be going into the Mono Lake basin at all? If so, try Rush Creek, and also the power canal return. You may want to detour up Lundy Canyon and check out that area as well - especially if you want to do some lake fishing in a GORGEOUS setting.
There's a book called Fly Fishing Mammoth: A Fly Fisher's Guide to the Mammoth Lakes Area so if you have time, check it out. It has some leads. Most of these places are out of the Yosemite area and along Rt. 395. You could also give the Bridgeport area a try, or closer in to Mammoth area like June Lake Loop. Since you will be so close, the traffic really isn't an issue in that area so you might want to do an exploratory trip and check out several areas.
The windex mixture sounds like a go. I'll try it. I'm headed to the bookstore to find something on central Ca fishing. I only have Northern CA books. I will be about 15 miles from Yosemite park. Am staying at the Tenaya, which is about 15 miles from the Awahnee from what I am told. Doesn't sound like it's near the Mono basin. I will only be able to fish one day since I am going to be with my husband and he doesn't fish. Guess I can't really ask him to twiddle his thumbs both days. Have been to the Bridgport area, but only fished Green Creek, before I became a flygirl. My grandparents used to have a cabin on that creek and my Dad worked a pack station that used to be there. Wanted to get up there this summer and fish the Walker, but having a tough time finding anyone to go with.
Wow, sounds great. Haven't done the Walker yet, but would love to do so. I will be attending a fly fishing clinic the 4th weekend in Sept. and then going back the last weekend in Sept. to fish around the Mono Basin area. Not sure if I will get to the Walker either.
As for the hubby, get him some hiking boots and binoculars and tell him to get back to nature while you fish. Surprising that he doesn't fish, and you do.
Mono basin is an amazing place. Very beautiful and wild. Going to be a bit chilly in the mornings by the end of Sept, but the colors will be spectacular. Wish I could join you. Catch some fish for me.
If you ever have a chance to fish the east walker it is a must ! The wild browns in there will test your skill to the max. Its a 5 hour drive for me but worth every minute. Yeah september it starts getting a little cold, I stayed near sonora pass in the middle of november last year and lets just say I went out and got a very nice 0 degree sleeping bag after that.
Regarding NZ mud snails, I don't believe that Windex is an approved snail killer. All-Purpose 409 is the easily-found substance. A week's drying out should also do the job, but if you are moving from one area to another, especially if you go over the hill to the eastern Sierra side, cleaning is a must. Here is a link to a previous thread on the subject. It includes a couple of websites that are kept up -to-date with good information.
I have never heard that Windex was an approved substance to kill NZMS. I wouldn't use it. The CA DF&G recommends the use of a 50/50 mixture of water and Formula 409 "Commercial Solutions". You can find it at Home Depot or Lowes. Supermarkets do not usually carry the right one. Make sure the bottle says, "Commercial Solutions" on it. You must completely immerse your gear in the mixture to effectively kill the NZMS. Using a spray bottle is not adequate.
Interestingly, I just read something that said that the CO DOW did the same test as was done in CA, but found that the Formula 409 should not be dilluted to kill 100% of the snails.
I think freezing your boots/waders overnight is the easiest way to kill the NZMS.

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like putting everything in a plastic bag and freezing for 24 hours...then letting everything dry out thoroughly should do it. But I will check out that link and see what it says.
